Who is Parmy Olson?

Parmy Olson is a technology journalist whose career has tracked the tech story wherever it turned strange. At Forbes she made her name reporting on Anonymous, the hacktivist movement, having earlier cut her teeth on a series about the subprime mortgage crisis; she ran the magazine’s London bureau before moving to its San Francisco office, and went on to write for The Wall Street Journal. Her own framing of the beat – the agitators and the innovators – remains hard to better.

Her standing was confirmed in 2024, when Supremacy: AI, ChatGPT and the race that will change the world won the Financial Times Business Book of the Year Award – the business establishment’s way of conceding that the AI race is the defining story, and that Olson told it best.

Our catalogue carries Supremacy, and it arrives with the confidence of a book that beat the field to the decade’s defining business story. Olson’s advantage is range: she has covered hackers, financial crises and the technology industry from both sides of the Atlantic, and that breadth shows in reporting that treats the AI race as a story about people and power rather than products.

In audio it plays like a corporate thriller with real stakes, and for UK listeners there is the added pleasure of a journalist who knows London as well as San Francisco. If you want one recording that explains how the ChatGPT era arrived, this is a very strong candidate – and the Financial Times, for what it is worth, agrees.
