Who is Peter Kay?

Peter Kay, born in Farnworth in 1973, is an English comedian, actor, writer and producer, and one of the most successful stand-ups Britain has produced: several of his tours have broken attendance and ticket-sales records, and his 2010 to 2011 tour entered the Guinness World Records as the most successful stand-up comedy tour of all time, playing to more than 1.14 million people. He has won a National Television Award, two British Academy Television Awards and three British Comedy Awards.

Kay studied media performance at the University of Salford, won Channel 4’s So You Think You’re Funny contest in 1997 and was nominated for a Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Fringe the following year. Television turned him into a fixture: That Peter Kay Thing, the much-loved Phoenix Nights, Max and Paddy’s Road to Nowhere, and later Cradle to Grave and Car Share. He mimed Tony Christie’s Amarillo for Comic Relief, sent up reality television in Britain’s Got the Pop Factor, and lent his voice to two Wallace and Gromit films and the children’s series Roary the Racing Car.

Comedy built on observation – family, telly and the way British people actually talk – transfers to audio better than almost any other kind. Peter Kay’s Diary brings that sensibility to our catalogue: the timing, the eye for everyday absurdity and the deep affection for British culture that have made Kay a record-breaking live draw. For UK listeners this is comfort listening in the best sense: warm, familiar and rooted in a shared culture so specific it simply would not translate anywhere else. It slots perfectly into the very moments Kay’s comedy has always celebrated – the commute, the kitchen, the long motorway drive.
