Who is Richard Dolan?

Richard M. Dolan came to the UFO question the long way round, through the archive rather than the anecdote. An American historian trained in Cold War strategy, Soviet history and international diplomacy, he spent his early years reading declassified files and learning how governments talk to themselves in private. That habit has never left him.

It shaped the work that made his name. UFOs and the National Security State, published in two volumes, treats the subject as a problem in modern history rather than a curiosity of the fringe, tracing decades of official interest through the paper trail it left behind. He followed it with A.D. After Disclosure, written with Bryce Zabel, a thought experiment about what would actually happen the morning after an announcement.

For more than twenty years he has been one of the most recognisable researchers in the field, a familiar voice on radio and a frequent contributor to documentaries. He writes for readers who dislike being told what to think: set out the evidence, weigh it honestly, and leave the door open wherever the record goes quiet.

UFOs for the 21st Century Mind is the Dolan title we have, and it happens to be the right place to start. Subtitled a fresh guide to an ancient mystery, it assumes no prior reading and maps the whole terrain: the early sightings, the abduction accounts, the classified budgets, the physics, and the awkward social question of why the topic generates so much heat.

Running to just over nine hours and narrated by the author himself, it has the unhurried feel of a very good lecture series from someone who has read everything and is not trying to sell you a conclusion. It carries a strong listener rating across several hundred reviews, which for a subject this contested is worth noting.

Sceptic, believer or simply curious, you will find it better company than the genre usually manages. Press play below.
