Who is Sophie Kinsella?

Madeleine Wickham had already published several straight novels under her own name when, in 2000, she invented a shopping-addicted financial journalist called Becky Bloomwood and a pen name to go with her. The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic turned Sophie Kinsella into one of the defining voices of British comic fiction, and the series ran on for years.

Born in London in 1969, she read politics, philosophy and economics at Oxford and worked as a financial journalist, which is precisely why the jokes about overdrafts land so well. Standalones such as Can You Keep a Secret?, The Undomestic Goddess and I’ve Got Your Number proved she was never merely a series writer, and her later work grew noticeably tender.

She was diagnosed with glioblastoma at the end of 2022, wrote about the experience with startling clarity, and died in December 2025 at the age of 55. What she leaves behind is funnier, and a great deal kinder, than the label ‘chick lit’ ever allowed for.

Sophie Kinsella in audiobooks

Begin at the beginning. The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic is read by Nell Hudson, who plays Becky Bloomwood’s self-justification perfectly straight and lets the comedy do its own work: nearly ten hours of denial, dodged telephone calls and cashmere.

If you would rather sample the later Kinsella, The Burnout has drawn the most listener reviews of her titles here. Bessie Carter narrates the story of two exhausted strangers sent to the same off-season seaside hotel, and it proves warmer and stranger than the premise suggests, with real feeling under the farce.

Remember Me?, the amnesia comedy read by Jaimi Barbakoff, is due to join them, so it is worth watching for. Whichever you pick, audio suits her enormously; these are books built out of voice. The selection is below.
