Who is Stephenie Meyer?

Stephenie Meyer, born in 1973, is the American novelist behind Twilight, the vampire romance series that has sold more than 160 million copies in 37 languages and made her the best-selling author in the United States in both 2008 and 2009. She had no writing experience whatsoever when the idea arrived in a dream; a reader steeped in Jane Austen and Shakespeare, with an English literature degree from Brigham Young University, she simply sat down and wrote it.

After many rejections, Little, Brown signed her to a three-book deal worth 750,000 dollars. The series grew to four novels, two spin-offs and a novella, plus commercially successful film adaptations – the final two, both parts of Breaking Dawn, produced through Fickle Fish Films, the company she co-founded. Her membership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints runs visibly through the work, in themes of agency, mortality, temptation and eternal life. Critics have called the prose overly simple; tens of millions of readers have shrugged and kept buying. She has also written for adults with The Host and The Chemist.

Stephenie Meyer in audiobooks

Twilight was made for immersive, compulsive consumption, and audio suits it perfectly: emotionally charged storytelling carried on feeling rather than fancy prose, which means the simplicity critics grumbled about becomes an asset in narration. Our catalogue includes two entries from the Twilight world, New Moon and Midnight Sun.

The themes underneath – temptation, mortality, the longing for something eternal – give the saga more pull than its detractors ever allowed, and for UK listeners returning out of nostalgia, or arriving fresh to see what the fuss was about, these are dependable long-haul listens.
