Terry Brooks, born in 1944, is an American writer of fantasy fiction and one of the most successful living authors in the genre. The numbers are the stuff of publishing legend: 23 New York Times bestsellers across his career and more than 25 million copies of his books in print. Few writers have held their place on the epic fantasy shelf for so long.
He writes mainly epic fantasy – the big-canvas, world-building variety – and has also turned his hand to two film novelisations along the way. In March 2025 he announced his semi-retirement from writing, easing one of modern fantasy’s most productive careers towards a gentler pace.
