Tim Spector, born in 1958, is a British epidemiologist, medical doctor and science writer whose work centres on the relationship between nutrition, the gut microbiome and health. In a field crowded with confident noise, his stock-in-trade is evidence.
His position is refreshingly clear. He argues against low-fat diets and fad diets alike, advocating instead a Mediterranean-style way of eating: heavily plant-based, high in fibre, sparing with ultra-processed foods, and built on as wide a diversity of plants as you can manage. It is advice with the rare distinction of being both evidence-led and achievable without misery – which is rarer in nutrition writing than it has any right to be.
