Who is W. Timothy Gallwey?

W. Timothy Gallwey, born in San Francisco in 1938, is the author who helped give modern coaching its vocabulary. Writing since the 1970s, he has built a series of books around a methodology he calls the Inner Game – an approach to performance and to personal and professional development that began on the tennis court and expanded into golf, skiing, music and the workplace.

The founding text is The Inner Game of Tennis, his seminal work, with more than a million copies in print. Few performance books survive their own decade; Gallwey’s has been setting the agenda for half a century, and the Inner Game idea escaped sport altogether a long time ago.

The Inner Game of Tennis may be the great sleeper of the sports shelf: nominally a tennis book, in practice a study of the inner obstacles that stand between ability and performance – which is why so many of its devotees have never held a racquet. The same method went on to serve golfers, skiers, musicians and managers, and that portability tells you where the real subject lies.

For UK listeners, audio suits the material unusually well: a book about what happens inside your head, delivered directly into it. Listen before a match, a recital or a difficult Monday morning; the lessons are built to transfer, which is precisely how Gallwey carried the Inner Game from tennis to music to work.
