Clara’s Verdict
Horrid Henry has been making children laugh – and occasionally making parents wince – for three decades now, and the audio adaptations produced by Novel Entertainment remain some of the best children’s listening available. Hugely Horrid collects ten stories performed by the full television cast, which is exactly the right way to approach these books: Henry’s world is fundamentally performative, built around his gift for scheming and his even greater gift for getting caught.
I’ve recommended these to several friends with children in the seven-to-ten age range, and without exception they’ve reported back that the audiobooks work brilliantly on car journeys. Henry is the kind of character children adore because he says and does things they would never dare, and adults secretly appreciate because he is, at heart, irrepressible rather than genuinely wicked.
About the Audiobook
Running at two hours and sixteen minutes, this collection contains ten stories: “Anything You Can Do,” “Weird Werewolf,” “Fangmangler,” “Good Day Bad Day,” “Haunted House,” “Horrid Halloween,” “Stays Up All Night,” “Horrid Hat,” “Perfect Panto,” and “Secret Club.” The selection has a Halloween theme running through several of the stories, which makes this particularly well-suited to the autumn season while remaining entertaining year-round.
Henry’s genius lies in the gap between his self-assessment – invariably heroic, misunderstood, deserving of better – and the reality the stories consistently demonstrate. The fantasy elements in stories like “Fangmangler” and “Weird Werewolf” play beautifully to young imaginations, while the school and family-set stories capture the specific micro-dramas of childhood with Lucinda Whiteley’s characteristic accuracy.
The full cast format means each character has a distinct voice, which significantly enhances the comedic timing. Henry’s put-upon younger brother Perfect Peter is particularly well-served in audio – the contrast between their vocal registers is one of the running pleasures of the series.
The Narration
The full cast from the television series brings an immediate familiarity to listeners who know the show, but the audio works equally well for those coming to it fresh. Cast recordings of children’s literature live and die on the quality of the ensemble, and this one is consistently excellent. The comedic timing is sharp throughout, and the variety of voices prevents the two-hour-plus runtime from feeling repetitive. The Halloween-themed stories in particular benefit from cast performance that can do justice to both the spooky atmosphere and the inevitable comic deflation.
What Readers Say
This title carries no written reviews at time of publication, though the broader Horrid Henry audio series from Novel Entertainment has a devoted following built over many years. Parents consistently cite the balance of humour and imagination as what keeps children returning to Henry, and the full cast format as a significant improvement over single-narrator recordings of the books. The 3.4 aggregate rating across the Audible listing reflects a small sample only.
Who Should Listen?
Children aged six to ten, primarily – though Henry’s comedy is broad enough to keep adults entertained rather than merely tolerating it on repeat car journeys. The short story format means attention need not be sustained for more than fifteen or twenty minutes at a time, which suits younger listeners perfectly. The Halloween-adjacent stories make this particularly good for October, though there is nothing that would actually frighten children who are old enough to appreciate the humour. An ideal purchase for any family with a long drive ahead.
