Clara’s Verdict

By the twenty-third entry in a series, you know the territory. You know Harry Grimm’s voice, his team, the particular quality of light over the Yorkshire Dales, and the way David Gatward handles the shift between procedural investigation and the quieter domestic rhythms that have always given this series its distinctive texture. Left for Dead delivers exactly what long-term readers expect – which is, in the case of a series this well-maintained, a genuine compliment.

Aubrey Parsons continues to be an excellent fit for this material. Seven hours of Dales-based crime fiction narrated with the right mix of seriousness and understated warmth.

About the Audiobook

A body is found hanging from the arches of Appersett Viaduct. The initial question – suicide or murder – resolves quickly into something more troubling: a pattern of killings, deeper and darker than the setting suggests. Grimm and his team work against the clock in the characteristically scenic but tonally dark landscape of the Dales, and the personal threads that have accumulated across the series continue to develop here: a wedding on the horizon, relationships tested, familiar faces in new circumstances.

Gatward has settled into a reliable rhythm with this series that rewards loyalty. The procedural elements are competent rather than inventive – the plotting is efficient and the reveals are satisfying without being startling – but the real pleasure is the ensemble. Harry Grimm as a character has developed genuine depth across twenty-plus volumes, and the supporting cast feels lived-in in a way that only sustained serial fiction can produce.

Readers coming to this without prior knowledge of the series would be missing significant context; the personal storylines in particular require investment from earlier volumes. Start at the beginning if you’re new – there are twenty-two previous entries to enjoy before this one.

The Narration

Aubrey Parsons has narrated consistently across the DCI Harry Grimm series and brings an intimacy with the characters that fresh narrators can’t replicate. His rendering of the Yorkshire landscape is effective – there’s a spaciousness in his pacing that reflects the setting – and he handles the procedural sections without allowing them to become monotone. Seven hours passes without fatigue.

What Readers Say

Rated 4.6 stars from two listeners. Both are clearly long-term series readers: one calls it “another great read” and notes they’ve already pre-ordered book 24, praising “super story telling” and the vividness of the Dales setting. Another, while rating it slightly below the best of the series, describes it as “very enjoyable” with “a good storyline and a few twists,” suggesting it to anyone invested in Grimm and the team. A third review mentions ongoing character developments – the wedding subplot, a character called Cheese – with the kind of affectionate familiarity that signals deep series engagement.

Who Should Listen?

For established fans of the DCI Harry Grimm series, this is a natural next purchase – pre-order the moment it’s available if you’re current with the series, as the fan base discusses plot details freely online. For new readers to British rural crime fiction, this is an excellent series to begin – just start with book one. If you enjoy Peter James’s Roy Grace series, or M.W. Craven’s Washington Poe, or the kind of detective fiction where landscape is as important as plot, this series belongs on your list.

Great to be back with Grimm and the team. Very enjoyable read, good storyline and a few twists. For me, not the best in the series but would still recommend and roll on book 24.

Great book

Once again Harry sorts things out. Will the wedding go as planned and will Grace go for a motor honeydew , no so sure. Not so sure about Cheese a a name either 😅. Look forward to the next instalment.
