Clara’s Verdict
Every so often a title arrives that quietly refuses the category it has been filed under, and Pretty Dead Girl is one of them. This is listed as an audiobook, and in the strict sense it is, but what you actually get is a nine-episode scripted drama with a full ensemble cast and a structure borrowed from television rather than from publishing. Natalie Tielcke has built it as a sequence of interrogations, one per episode, and the whole thing runs to four hours and fifty-two minutes. I went in expecting a thriller read aloud. I came out having listened to something much closer to a season of prestige crime television with the pictures removed.
That distinction matters more than it sounds, because it changes how well the thing works and who it will work for. The interrogation structure gives Tielcke a natural engine. Each episode puts a different person in the chair, each account quietly contradicts the last, and the picture of Cosma Passadakis assembles itself out of the gaps between what people are willing to say aloud. It is an efficient piece of construction, and at under five hours it never has room to sag. What it lacks is the interiority a novel would have given us. You stay outside these characters throughout, watching them perform for the police, and if what you want is to live inside a protagonist’s head, this format cannot offer it.
About the Audiobook
The premise is deliberately familiar. Cosma Passadakis was the centre of gravity in her school friendship group, the one who held the clique together, and she is found dead in a roadside ditch before the first episode has properly got going. Her boyfriend Nico and her friends Eva, Shirin and Luke are left to work out what happened, and the police investigation runs alongside their own increasingly frantic one. The publisher promises that nothing in Cosma’s picture-perfect life was as it seemed, which is hardly a novel proposition in this genre, but Tielcke’s execution keeps the revelations arriving at a rate that stops you getting ahead of her.
What lifts it above the standard dead-girl setup, and I say that as a critic who has grown weary of the standard dead-girl setup, is that Tielcke is genuinely more interested in the survivors than in the corpse. Every interrogation sparks new revelations, as the description has it, and those revelations tend to concern the living rather than the dead. The friendship group is the real subject. Who owed whom. Who resented whom. Who was quietly frightened of Cosma rather than devoted to her. By the fourth or fifth episode the question has shifted from who killed her to what exactly this group of teenagers was to each other in the first place.
It is an Audible Originals production released on 14 July 2026, so it is very new indeed, and it is already sitting inside the current Audible UK charts. No series is indicated and none is needed: the nine episodes form one self-contained story. Four hours and fifty-two minutes makes this a two-evening listen, or a single very long journey, and the episode breaks give you natural stopping points if you would rather ration it.
The Narration
A word of warning about the metadata, because it will mislead you. Moses Alexander is credited as the narrator, and he is not one. He plays Luke, one of the four friends. This is a full-cast recording with no narrator at all in the conventional sense, which is worth knowing before you press play expecting a single guiding voice to steer you through the story.
The cast is a genuinely strong one and it is the production’s best asset. Cecilia Appiah plays Cosma, which means the dead girl speaks, and the decision to give her a voice rather than leaving her as an absence is the single smartest choice in the whole production. Ariyon Bakare takes Chief Inspector Michalik and Emily Beecham plays Detective Fran Blum, and between them they establish the procedural spine that holds the teenage chaos in place. Lesley Sharp appears as Karen Seidel and does what Lesley Sharp always does, which is make a handful of minutes feel like a fully inhabited person.
Yasmin Al-Khudhairi as Shirin, Corinna Brown as Eva, Jake Kenny-Byrne as Nico and Ronan Raftery as Thomas Feldmann complete the group. The young performers are well differentiated, which matters enormously in a piece where four teenagers are interviewed in rotation and you need to know instantly whose version of the evening you are hearing. I never once lost track of who was speaking, and in a full-cast production carrying this many voices that is the whole ballgame.
What Readers Say
This one is too new for a meaningful listener consensus. No average rating has accumulated on the UK listing yet and no written reviews have appeared, which is exactly what you would expect from a title released in the middle of July 2026. What it does have is chart performance, and it climbed fast, which tells you the platform has pushed it and that the push has landed with people.
In the absence of listener testimony, let me offer my own reservations in place of theirs. The interrogation format is a gift for pacing but it flattens character, and two of the friends never quite come into focus as people rather than as suspects. The ending resolves cleanly, perhaps a shade too cleanly for a story that has spent nine episodes insisting nothing is simple. And the promise that everyone is a suspect is doing a certain amount of marketing work: in practice the field narrows a good deal faster than that phrase implies, and by episode six most attentive listeners will have their candidate.
Who Should Listen?
Anyone raised on Radio 4 drama, or anyone who has been working through the recent wave of scripted Audible Originals, will find this an easy and satisfying five hours. It is also a sensible entry point if you have never tried a full-cast production and want to discover whether the form suits you, because the runtime is short enough to risk and the ensemble is good enough to make the case for the format properly.
Give it a miss if what you value in crime fiction is prose. Tielcke writes dialogue here and very little else, so the sentence-level texture of a good crime novel is simply not on the menu. Give it a miss too if you need a single trusted voice in your ear, or if a school friendship group sounds like more teenage drama than you can currently face. Sample the first episode before committing, because you will know within a quarter of an hour whether the register works for you.
