Canon Clement Mysteries: Audiobooks in Order

by Richard Coles

A country parish, a body where no body should be, and a clergyman who notices rather more than his congregation gives him credit for. Richard Coles’s Canon Clement Mysteries fold proper whodunit plotting into gentle village comedy across Murder Before Evensong and A Death in the Parish. At roughly fifteen hours across two novels, this is cosy crime with a dog collar: warm, wry and quietly observant of English village life.

Why listen to Canon Clement Mysteries?

Cosy crime lives or dies on company, and in audio you get to spend whole afternoons in Canon Clement’s world: the parish meetings, the small rivalries, the sharp asides delivered under the breath. Comedy of this gently ironic sort lands better read aloud than on the page, because timing is everything.Start with Murder Before Evensong, which sets up the village and its fault lines in seven and a half hours, then move straight on to A Death in the Parish, the longer and, on the evidence of listener ratings, stronger of the two. This one suits listeners who like their mysteries unhurried: fans of classic village crime, Sunday afternoon listening, and anyone who believes a murder investigation is improved by tea and light sarcasm.

Clara’s verdict

Clara Whitmore

3.5/5

I will be honest: Murder Before Evensong divided me a little, as it clearly divided listeners, who average it at 3.8 stars. The pacing dawdles in places. But A Death in the Parish is a real step up, and its 4.2 star rating reflects a series finding its feet: tighter plotting, the same lovely warmth. I finished it wanting a third visit to the parish, which is, I think, the truest test of cosy crime.
