Discworld: Audiobooks in Order

by Terry Pratchett

Terry Pratchett’s Discworld needs little introduction: forty-one novels of satirical fantasy set on a flat world carried through space on the backs of four elephants and a giant turtle. The two audiobooks gathered here, Wintersmith and The Shepherd’s Crown, come from the beloved younger strand of the sequence following the trainee witch Tiffany Aching, and both hold a remarkable 4.8-star rating. The latter, Pratchett’s final novel, gives the whole Discworld its farewell.

Why listen to Discworld?

Discworld in audio has been transformed in recent years, and Indira Varma’s narration is central to that. She plays Pratchett’s wit absolutely straight, which is precisely what it needs, and she gives the witches a warmth and flinty intelligence that lifts every scene. Ten hours in her company pass alarmingly quickly.Start with Wintersmith. It comes first in sequence, and its wintry premise makes it a perfect cold-weather listen; save The Shepherd’s Crown, Pratchett’s last book, for when you are ready to say goodbye. Although these novels sit on our children’s shelves, I would press them on adults without hesitation: anyone who likes their fantasy funny, humane and quietly wise will be at home here. If you already know Discworld in print, the audio versions are a genuine re-reading rather than a repeat.

Clara’s verdict

5.0/5

I would happily give Discworld six stars if the scale allowed. Both volumes here sit at 4.8, and for once I think the crowd is underselling it, though I note the sample is small, with fewer than twenty ratings between them on our listings. The Shepherd’s Crown moves me every time; knowing Pratchett wrote it while gravely ill gives its themes of succession and endings an extra charge. If you only ever try one series on my recommendation, let it be this one.
