Why listen to Terminal List?

Thrillers of this stripe are arguably better heard than read. Tension is a matter of timing, and audio enforces the author’s tempo: you cannot skim ahead to check that everyone survives, so every operation plays out in real time against your pulse. The two books also offer usefully different commitments. In the Blood, at 6 hours and 49 minutes, is a single-weekend listen, whilst The Devil’s Hand more than doubles that runtime for those who want the slow accumulation of threat. Newcomers may prefer to begin at the series’ start, but of the pair here, the shorter book is the gentler way to sample Carr’s style. It belongs in the library of anyone who likes their heroes capable, their stakes high and their downtime minimal.

Clara’s verdict

Clara Whitmore

4.0/5

I timed my verdict carefully with this one. Across 35 listener ratings the series averages 4.5 stars, and what strikes me is that the shorter, sharper In the Blood edges out its longer stablemate, which tells me Carr’s writing tightens when the clock runs down. This is efficient, muscular storytelling that knows exactly what it is. I would not call it subtle, and it does not need to be. It kept me listening, and that is the job.
