Why listen to The Cemetery of Forgotten Books?

Zafón’s prose is ornate in the best sense, full of shadowed streets and sentences that curl like smoke, and that is precisely why it flourishes in audio. Read aloud, the rhythm does the work your eyes would otherwise rush past.Dan Stevens is a shrewd piece of casting. His narration is measured and faintly conspiratorial, the voice of someone telling you a secret after midnight, which is exactly the register this saga demands. The Angel’s Game stands on its own, so there is no obstacle to beginning here even though it is the second book. This one is for listeners who love books about books, slow-burning mystery and atmosphere thick enough to touch. Devotees of tidy, brisk thrillers should look elsewhere.

Clara’s verdict

Clara Whitmore

4.0/5

I admire this saga more than I can tidily explain. The Angel’s Game holds a 4.4 star average from seven listeners here, a shade below adoration, and I understand why: Zafón asks for patience, and his darkness is not to every taste. Yet Dan Stevens gives a performance of real elegance across its fifteen and a half hours, and whole scenes have stayed with me. Flawed, seductive, and worth your time if atmosphere matters to you.
