About this Audiobook

Random House presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Spark Joy by Marie Kondo, read by Sumalee Montano. This edition includes a bonus PDF of reference materials.

Spark Joy is an in-depth, line illustrated, room-by-room guide to decluttering and organising your home. It covers every room in the house from bedrooms and kitchens to bathrooms and living rooms as well as a wide range of items in different categories, including clothes, photographs, paperwork, books, cutlery, cosmetics, shoes, bags, wallets and valuables. Charming line drawings explain how to properly organise drawers, wardrobes, cupboards and cabinets. The illustrations also show Ms Kondo’s unique folding method, clearly showing how to fold anything from shirts, trousers and jackets to skirts, socks and bras.

The secret to Marie Kondo’s unique and simple KonMari tidying method is to focus on what you want to keep, not what you want to get rid of. Ask yourself if something ‘sparks joy’ and suddenly it becomes so much easier to understand if you really need it in your home and your life. When you surround yourself with things you love you will find that your whole life begins to change.

Marie Kondo’s first book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying, presents her unique tidying philosophy and introduces readers to the basics of her KonMari method. It has already transformed the homes and lives of millions of people around the world. Spark Joy is Marie Kondo’s in-depth tidying masterclass, focusing on the detail of how to declutter and organise your home.

Clara’s Verdict

Marie Kondo’s first book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying, was the kind of publishing phenomenon that comes along once a decade – a book that genuinely altered how millions of people relate to their possessions. Spark Joy is the companion volume, and it occupies an unusual position: less a sequel than a detailed technical manual for those who have already bought into the KonMari philosophy and now need granular guidance on execution. Does it justify its existence as an audiobook? Mostly, yes. Sumalee Montano’s narration is elegant and measured, and while some of the illustrated material necessarily loses something in audio format, the philosophy at the heart of it – surround yourself only with things that bring you genuine joy – translates beautifully to a listened experience. This is Book 2 in The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up series.

About the Audiobook

Where The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying makes the philosophical case for the KonMari method, Spark Joy takes you room by room through the practical application. Kondo covers bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and living rooms in detail, addressing an enormous range of items – from clothes and shoes to photographs, paperwork, cutlery, cosmetics, and bags. The text describes her unique folding method in detail, though listeners should be aware that the original print version includes line illustrations which obviously can’t be reproduced in audio; the audiobook edition includes a bonus PDF of reference materials to compensate.

The animating principle throughout is deceptively simple: rather than asking yourself what to discard, ask yourself what to keep. If something sparks joy, it earns a place in your home. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t. Kondo applies this test with Buddhist consistency across every category of object imaginable, and her approach to each category is specific enough to be practically useful rather than vaguely inspirational. Running to 5 hours and 31 minutes, this is a purposeful listen with a clear agenda.

The Narration

Sumalee Montano brings a calm, unhurried quality to the narration that suits the material perfectly. Kondo’s writing has a meditative register – thoughtful, precise, occasionally whimsical – and Montano honours it without tipping into pastiche. The pacing is deliberate, giving the listener time to absorb each instruction before moving on. It’s the kind of narration you might put on whilst actually sorting through a wardrobe, which is, one suspects, exactly what many listeners do.

What Readers Say

The audiobook holds a 4.6-star rating. Mari Craig, writing from the UK in the midst of her own “tidying festival,” gave it five stars without reservation, finding the repetition of ideas from the first book useful reinforcement rather than redundant padding. Robby Evans, who had recently moved from a large house to a smaller one and found herself surrounded by chaos, described it as “such a delightful little book” that prompted urgent and much-needed action. Mandy H noted that whilst the print edition is “a beautiful book,” the content is “just as impressive” – a useful indicator that the audio version retains the essential value. One reviewer from Canada observed that the book works well as a standalone reference rather than requiring front-to-back listening, which is a genuine advantage in audio format.

Who Should Listen?

Ideal for anyone who has already read or listened to The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying and wants to go deeper. It’s also well-suited to people mid-way through a major declutter who have hit specific stumbling blocks – what to do with that drawer full of cables, whether the paperwork mountain can really be reduced, how to actually fold a fitted sheet without weeping. If you’re new to KonMari, start with the first book; if you’re ready for the detail, Spark Joy delivers it. Available on Audible UK.
