Saffron, a fierce and untamed Dragon Rider, must channel her wild magic to stand against the sinister Dark Mage. Guided by a prophecy, she teams up with a reluctant heir to reclaim his throne and save Torvald from ruin.

Clara’s Verdict

Nine novels, one world, and seventy-three hours of dragon-riding adventure – the Torvald Dragon Riders boxset is, quite simply, a proper commitment. Ava Richardson has built something genuinely ambitious here: three complete trilogies, each following a different hero across the same richly imagined realm, woven together with enough consistency to feel like a single sweeping saga rather than a loose anthology. For the young adult fantasy listener who devours series and immediately hungers for more, this is the answer to that particular hunger.

Tiffany Williams brings enormous energy to the narration, and the sheer scale of the thing means you’re unlikely to resurface for several weeks. That is not a criticism. I found it a thoroughly satisfying binge – the kind of reading experience that reminds you why you fell in love with fantasy in the first place. Richardson has real craft in her world-building, and the decision to give each dragon two riders rather than one creates interpersonal dynamics that keep the material fresh across nine full novels. This is not simply more of the same; each trilogy genuinely earns its place in the collection.

About the Audiobook

The world of Torvald runs on dragon bonds, ancient magic, and the kind of destiny-versus-choice drama that good young adult fantasy has always done well. The boxset bundles three complete trilogies – nine full novels – into a single package, significantly expanded and republished in November 2024 with additional material. If you’ve encountered earlier versions of Richardson’s Torvald world, this is the definitive edition.

The first trilogy follows Neill Torvald, a young man desperate to prove himself to a warlord father, whose carefully laid plans are upended when a runaway princess crashes into his life. His kingdom in turmoil, Neill must rally the Dragon Riders and confront a rogue sorcerer in a story about inherited expectations and the courage to define your own destiny. The second trilogy introduces Agathea Flamma and the unlikely Sebastian – opposites thrown together by a dragon who sees potential in both of them, their quest centred on the sacred Dragon Stones and an ancient evil that has been gathering strength in the margins of the world. The third gives us Saffron, fierce and wild-talented, guided by prophecy toward a reluctant heir and the sinister Dark Mage whose shadow falls across all three trilogies.

Richardson wears her influences openly – the publisher invites comparison with Eragon and the Dragonriders of Pern, and fans of those worlds will feel immediately at home. What sets Torvald apart is the double-rider concept: every dragon bonds with two people, creating a built-in partnership dynamic that generates far more interpersonal drama than the lone-hero model allows. The training sequences, court intrigues, class tensions, and the accumulated weight of multiple prophecies keep the pace from dragging despite the considerable length. The world feels lived-in across all nine books, which is a real achievement for a boxset of this scale.

The Narration

Tiffany Williams is well-suited to this kind of material. She navigates the sizeable cast across all nine books with admirable clarity – no small feat given that characters recur across trilogies and listeners need to track who’s who over seventy-plus hours. Her instinct for pacing in battle sequences is reliable: she accelerates without becoming breathless, which matters when you’re dealing with aerial combat at considerable altitude. The more emotional beats – particularly Saffron’s arc in the third trilogy – land with genuine warmth. Over seventy-three hours, she never sounds tired of the material, which is absolutely crucial; a restless or bored narrator at that length would be fatal to the experience.

What Readers Say

Listeners across the UK have responded very warmly. One reviewer described being “almost unable to put them down” across all nine books, praising both the story and the craft. Another – Terry A. – made the astute observation that the double-rider structure sets this apart from standard dragon fantasy, generating “intrigue and life like no other” as characters learn to conquer fear, forge unexpected friendships, and navigate class prejudice. He described it as a “topsy turvy rollercoaster” in the best possible way. A third listener noted the structural novelty: “three different stories, spread over three books each, about the same world,” acknowledging a brief adjustment period before the format clicks into place. Mr D. Turner consumed all nine books “in a very short time” and called them “absolutely brilliant.” The collection holds 4.6 stars.

Who Should Listen?

Ideal for teenagers and young adults who want a proper fantasy saga rather than a standalone, and for adult listeners who grew up on Dragonriders of Pern and want something in that spirit for a new generation. The double-rider concept makes it particularly strong for readers who enjoy relationship dynamics and partnership tensions alongside the more conventional action. If you have a long commute, a holiday coming up, or simply want something substantial to sink into for a month of evenings, this boxset delivers on every front. Also well-suited to family listening – the content is genuinely appropriate for its young adult audience while retaining enough complexity to hold adult attention.

A little getting used to with 3 different stories, spread over 3 books each, but about the same world. Also told in chapters by the 2 main characters of that time. An interesting read.
