About this Audiobook

Belle

When you’ve been told your whole life that something is sinful, you have two options. Avoid it like the plague, like it has the power to destroy all that is good and pure. Or become as fixated upon it as Eve was upon that apple.

I’m sick of the push-pull of terror and temptation. It’s tearing me apart. I just want a bite of the apple. More than a bite. I want to devour it. Have its juices spill from my lips.

And by apple, I, of course, mean sex.

Rafe

My new neighbor is the kind of beautiful that could bring a man to his knees. But she’s twenty-two. Fourteen years younger than me. That’s too young.

I’ve vowed to stay away – until she comes to me for help.

It seems she has something to dispose of: her chastity. And it seems I have something she wants: the club I run for discerning adults. More specifically, the program we’ve created for women just like Belle. A program that will transform her from innocent to damned. Unfurl the parts of her she’s denied until now.

It seems I may not be the only one falling to my knees after all.

God help us both.

Unfurl is a steamy age-gap contemporary romance. It’s a standalone with an HEA.

Intended for mature listeners.

Clara’s Verdict

Elodie Hart – the pen name of a British author writing contemporary romance with a distinctly UK sensibility – has built a devoted readership with her Alchemy series, and Unfurl, the first book, makes clear why. It is emphatically steamy, yes, but what distinguishes it from the vast majority of its genre is the psychological seriousness with which it treats its central theme: the intersection of religious upbringing and erotic desire. Kylie Stewart’s narration across ten hours and eight minutes is excellent, and the result is a romance that earns its heat rather than simply generating it. The series label is Alchemy, and there is something genuinely alchemical happening here.

About the audiobook

Belle has grown up being told that sexual desire is sinful. The push-pull between terror and temptation is, she decides, destroying her – and she wants it to stop. The solution she arrives at is startling: seek out Rafe, the forty-year-old owner of an exclusive club for discerning adults, who has developed a programme specifically designed to help women like Belle dismantle their conditioning and discover what they actually want.

Rafe, for his part, has sworn to stay away from the twenty-two-year-old neighbour who is too young, too beautiful, and too complicated. He fails, of course – but Hart takes real care with how this failure unfolds. The age-gap dynamic is treated with honesty rather than fantasy; Rafe’s attraction to Belle is accompanied by genuine misgivings, and his capitulation is credible rather than convenient. The novel is a standalone with a happy ending, as Hart’s description makes clear.

The religious guilt thread is handled with particular sensitivity. Reviews suggest that Hart writes from a position of genuine understanding of what it means to be told that your desires are shameful – the psychology rings true in a way that pure fantasy rarely achieves. This is the first book in the Alchemy series, which reviewers suggest rewards reading in order.

The narration

Kylie Stewart narrates with a precision and restraint that serves the material well. The intimate scenes require a narrator who can calibrate heat without tipping into performance, and Stewart manages this with skill. Her rendering of Belle’s internal conflict – the oscillation between longing and self-recrimination – is particularly good. At over ten hours, this is a substantial listen; Stewart sustains the quality throughout.

What readers say

The audiobook holds a rating of 4.3 from 15 listeners. Esther Taylor gave it five stars and called it “possibly one of the more erotic ones I’ve read,” praising the “religion v sex storyline” and noting that “the build up of the story was great and the sex was HOT.” The reviewer Just_call_me_baldilocks, describing herself as “a recovering Catholic,” wrote that the book “hit on levels I didn’t know I had,” with “the spice hitting 5 chillis.” Sarah B, who had completed the entire Alchemy series, praised Hart as one of the best UK-based romance writers, noting that “the characters are so well developed” and praising Hart’s willingness to write characters “who never shy away from their feelings.” Beff offered a more measured three stars, describing it as “a feel good book with lots of spice” without being completely engrossing.

Who should listen?

This is for adult listeners who want their romance with genuine psychological content as well as significant heat, and who are open to a novel that takes the legacy of religious upbringing seriously rather than treating it as mere backstory. Listeners who have found mainstream contemporary romance too cosy or too formulaic may find that Hart’s willingness to go to more complicated emotional places is refreshing. Fans of British romance – the setting and sensibility are distinctly UK – will appreciate finally having a series that feels like it belongs to them. Start with Unfurl and plan for the rest of the Alchemy series.
