Dan Abnett, born in 1965, is an English writer who has spent his career moving comfortably between comic books and novels. Since the 1990s he has written for Marvel Comics and its British imprint Marvel UK, contributed to DC Comics titles, and worked on 2000 AD, often in collaboration with fellow writer Andy Lanning, with whom he has formed one of the most durable partnerships in the business.

It is his work for Games Workshop’s Black Library, though, that has made him a household name among genre readers. His Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 novels and graphic novels now run to several dozen titles and have sold more than two million copies – a remarkable tally for tie-in fiction, and proof that Abnett treats the form as proper novel-writing rather than franchise filler. In 2009 he branched out with his first original fiction novels, published through Angry Robot.
