Eisenhorn: Audiobooks in Order

by Dan Abnett

Few names command more respect among fantasy and science fiction listeners than Dan Abnett, and Eisenhorn is the series that built much of that reputation. The volumes here, Hereticus and The Magos, represent the darker, later stretch of the saga: twenty-nine hours of heresy, hunting and moral erosion. With Hereticus alone holding 4.7 stars from more than 800 listeners, this is grim, gripping storytelling with a devoted following.

Why listen to Eisenhorn?

Ask any devotee of this universe about audio and one name comes back: Toby Longworth. His narration is, for many listeners, inseparable from these books: a gravelled, authoritative delivery that treats the material with total seriousness while relishing every villainous turn. Twenty-nine hours in his company pass alarmingly quickly.A word on order: Hereticus is the third Eisenhorn novel and The Magos the fourth, so newcomers should ideally work forward from the start of the series before arriving here. The Magos is also the heavyweight of the pair at just over twenty hours. This suits listeners who like their fiction dark, densely plotted and unapologetically pulpy in the best sense, and who want a narrator who sounds like he was born to it.

Clara’s verdict

Clara Whitmore

4.5/5

The consistency here tells its own story: both volumes rate 4.7 stars, with Hereticus earning that mark from a substantial 845 listeners, which in my experience is where inflated averages go to die. It deserves it. I found the darkness genuinely earned rather than decorative, and Toby Longworth’s delivery elevates material that could easily tip into melodrama. My only hesitation is for newcomers landing mid-series. Start further back and you will get far more from these hours.
