Who is David Mitchell?

David Mitchell, born in 1974, is a British comedian, actor and writer – one half of Mitchell and Webb, and for many the definitive Mark Corrigan in Channel 4’s Peep Show, a performance that won him the BAFTA for Best Comedy Performance in 2009. With Robert Webb he wrote and starred in a string of sketch shows, including That Mitchell and Webb Look.

Beyond the double act he is everywhere in British comedy: team captain on Would I Lie to You?, host of Radio 4’s The Unbelievable Truth, Shakespeare in Upstart Crow, and since 2024 the lead in the BBC detective comedy-drama Ludwig. He is also a proper writer, contributing opinion pieces to The Observer and The Guardian – and it is that Mitchell, the essayist, who matters most on this page.

David Mitchell in audiobooks

Mitchell’s comic register – precise, exasperated, morally certain about small things and suspicious of grand ones – transfers to the page intact, and audio gives it back its natural voice. David Mitchell: Back Story is his account of himself, delivered with typical self-awareness, while Thinking About It Only Makes It Worse and Dishonesty Is the Second-Best Policy distil years of opinion writing into rant-sized portions, ideal for dipping. Unruly shows the essayist’s wit applied at full book length. If you enjoy being argued at brilliantly for hours, there is no better company in British audio.
