Who is Lisa Jewell?

Lisa Jewell began, famously, on a wager. A friend bet her she could not write three chapters of a novel; the result was Ralph’s Party in 1999, which went on to be the best selling debut novel in Britain that year. Born in London in 1968, she had been working in fashion retail and had no particular plan to become a writer at all.

What happened next is one of the more interesting second acts in British fiction. After a decade of sharp, affectionate novels about London lives, she turned towards psychological suspense in the mid 2010s and found she was frighteningly good at it. Then She Was Gone, The Family Upstairs, Invisible Girl and None of This Is True each pushed further into the territory she now owns: ordinary houses, plausible families, and the person inside them who should not be there.

She is exceptionally good on the domestic detail that makes the horror land, and she never treats her characters as mere mechanism.

Don’t Let Him In is the one to reach for first. It carries far and away the greatest weight of listener ratings of anything of hers here, and Richard Armitage narrates, which is close to ideal casting: his warmth is exactly what a story about a charming man in other people’s lives requires.

It Could Have Been Her is the newer title, with a missing girl, a dog with no owner in sight and a decaying Hampstead house called Thornwood. Lesley Sharp leads a full cast through it, and the multi-voice production gives the alternating perspectives real separation.

Either works as a first Jewell, and between them they show both halves of what she does: the slow domestic infiltration and the properly plotted mystery. Both are waiting below.
