Who is Patrick Radden Keefe?

Few reporters have made non-fiction feel this much like a thriller. Patrick Radden Keefe is an American writer and a staff writer at The New Yorker, where he has spent years on stories most journalists would consider finished after one long feature and he considers barely begun.

His subjects tend to share a shape: a secret, a family, and a long silence around both. Say Nothing traced a disappearance in Belfast into the heart of the Troubles. Empire of Pain followed three generations of the Sackler dynasty from immigrant striving to the marketing of OxyContin. Earlier work took on state surveillance and the smuggling networks of Chinatown, while Rogues gathered his magazine profiles of arms dealers, wine forgers and other charming criminals.

He is a patient interviewer and a ruthless structurer, and he has said his aim is to make the reader forget they are being informed. It works. The prizes have followed, though the better evidence is how quickly his books get pressed into somebody else’s hands.

Empire of Pain is where most listeners should begin: eighteen hours on the Sackler family, the fortune they built and the painkiller that reshaped American medicine. Keefe reads it himself, and his flat, precise delivery keeps an enormous cast legible across three generations. It is the best rated of his titles here.

Alongside it sits London Falling, his 2026 investigation into the death of a nineteen-year-old who had reinvented himself as the son of a Russian oligarch. Out of that one strange life he builds a portrait of a city where almost everything is for sale, and he narrates this one too.
