Fantasy debuts are difficult to evaluate fairly. There’s always the question of what a series will become versus what the first book currently is, and Bonds of Betrayal is very much the work of a writer establishing a world, a set of characters, and a conflict that is clearly designed to unfold across multiple volumes. What Helen Archer has achieved in this opening instalment is a well-constructed starting point: a protagonist with genuine interiority, a world with enough texture to reward investment, and a central conflict involving betrayal and identity that is handled with more sophistication than the YA fantasy market usually demands.
Katie Hall’s narration is well-matched to the material – emotionally present without being melodramatic, which is exactly what a first-person narrative about trauma and trust requires.

Katie Hall narrates, and she brings Eleyana’s first-person perspective to life with real investment. Her voice suits the character’s age and experience, and the eight-and-a-half-hour runtime is sustained without losing energy.

Who Should Listen?
Young adult and new-adult fantasy readers will feel immediately at home here, particularly those who enjoy political intrigue and morally complicated characters alongside the romance. If you enjoyed Sarah J. Maas’s earlier work – the Throne of Glass series, say – for its mixture of survival narrative and slow-burn romance, this shares some of that DNA while finding its own voice.
