About this Audiobook

Brought to you by Penguin.

From New York Times Bestseller and BookTok sensation Rina Kent comes the first generation of the thrilling Legacy of Gods series.

He’s no fairy tale king.

Levi
Here, little princess. I’m your king.
You have three rules.
Bow. Break. Kneel.
You can fight me, claw at me, but in the end, you’ll say,
long live the king.

Astrid

One day I’m nothing but a shadow at the Royal Elite school.
The next, I’m prey. Hunted. Cornered.
He tears my world apart piece by piece,
and now he wants my heart.
He thinks he owns me. He thinks he’ll break me.
But this princess will drag the king to his knees.

Cruel King is a complete standalone prequel in the Royal Elite world. No book should be read before this.

Clara’s Verdict

Dark romance with a BookTok following is a genre with a recognisable formula, and Rina Kent executes that formula with more skill and self-awareness than most of its practitioners manage. Cruel King is the standalone prequel to the Royal Elite series – a world of elite schools, psychological manipulation, obsessive power dynamics, and the slow and painful dismantling of carefully constructed emotional defences. Kent knows exactly what she is doing and precisely why her readers return to her work again and again. Levi is not a romantic hero in any conventional sense, and Astrid is not waiting to be rescued by anyone. What you get instead is a highly charged, intentionally uncomfortable push-and-pull between two characters who are both damaged and determined in different ways, and whose eventual understanding of each other is genuinely hard won rather than simply declared by the narrative and expected to land. If you can meet the book on its own terms, it is genuinely and consistently entertaining across its full nine hours.

About the Audiobook

Published by Evermore (Penguin Audio) in January 2026 and running at nine hours and eleven minutes, Cruel King establishes the Royal Elite School world before the events of the main series. Levi is the self-appointed king of Royal Elite – possessive, manipulative, and entirely certain of his dominance over the social hierarchy he has built and maintains. Astrid begins as a shadow at the school, invisible and overlooked by almost everyone, then suddenly becomes Levi’s target: hunted, cornered, and the subject of his unsettling and obsessive attention. The premise is structured as a dual-perspective narrative, alternating between Levi’s controlled, calculating pursuit and Astrid’s fierce and increasingly complicated determination not to be broken by him or by anyone else.

What Kent does well – and what distinguishes her stronger work from weaker entries in the dark romance genre – is giving both characters genuine interiority and understandable psychological motivation. Levi’s cruelty has roots that make it explicable even if they do not make it forgivable, and Astrid’s resistance carries its own depth and consistency that makes her far more than a passive target. The plot twists that arrive in the final act have genuinely surprised experienced readers of the genre, which is a real achievement in a category where readers believe they have encountered every possible narrative structure already.

The book is a complete standalone and does not require prior knowledge of the Royal Elite universe, though the world is rich and internally consistent enough that many readers are drawn into the full series after completing this one. Kent is uncompromising about the darkness of her material and does not soften it or offer easy redemption arcs as shortcuts to emotional resolution. What she offers instead is honesty about what this kind of dynamic costs, and what it might – under very specific circumstances – eventually become.

The Narration

Aaron Shedlock narrates, and the performance handles the dual perspective and the considerable tonal range – menacing to vulnerable, controlled to unravelling – with real assurance. Dark romance narration requires the ability to make psychologically intense behaviour compelling without endorsing it, and Shedlock manages the material carefully. The nine-hour runtime gives the relationship’s development genuine room to breathe, and the pacing reflects the balance of confrontation, revelation, and emotional resolution that the source material demands.

What Readers Say

Rated 4.3 from twenty-three UK listeners, with responses that capture the book’s specific appeal vividly. One reviewer calls it “posh Skins with money, manipulation, and unresolved emotional trauma in a tailored blazer” – an excellent capsule description of the elite school dark romance genre. Another states with perfect clarity: “Was it healthy? Absolutely not. Was I entertained? Deeply.” A long-term fan writes that she has read it at least ten times and it never loses its hold on her. A more measured review acknowledges a slow start but was ultimately won over by plot twists it genuinely did not anticipate.

Who Should Listen?

What is also notable about this audiobook edition is the way Shedlock’s performance navigates the specific challenge of making Levi’s obsessive behaviour audible without either endorsing it or making it cartoonishly villainous. The line is genuinely narrow, and the narrator walks it with care. The result is a performance that lets listeners bring their own response to the material without having it pre-digested for them.

For fans of dark romance, enemies-to-lovers dynamics, and elite school settings – particularly those already in the Royal Elite world who want the origin story of its central couple. Also a strong introduction to Rina Kent for new readers, given the standalone structure and the way it sets up the full series for those who want to continue. This is not a book for readers who find manipulative power dynamics uncomfortable; it is written with full commitment for those who find them compelling, and it never softens or apologises for that commitment. Good book

I loved the snippets we get of Levi and Astrid in their kids book so naturally I had to read their story as well. I have to say so many things make sense now. Good story, in typical Rina style the plot is scarce but the focus is the relationship…
