Pierce Brown has never been a gentle writer, but Dark Age is something else again: nearly 34 hours of war, grief and political wreckage, told with the swagger of an author who knows precisely how much his readers will endure for him. This is the fifth book of the Red Rising saga, and it earns its title. I finished it feeling wrung out in the way only the best bleak fiction manages – impressed, bruised and quietly grateful for daylight.

What elevates it above mere grimness is control. Brown moves the story across several perspectives without ever losing the thread, and the great set pieces – Mercury above all – are orchestrated rather than merely detonated. My honest caveats: newcomers have no business starting here, and the darkness is genuinely unrelenting, so time your listen for a robust week. But for anyone invested in Darrow’s long, compromised revolution, this is the saga operating at full power.

The theme is right there in the title – what revolutions become when they outlive their founding dream.

The Narration

Tim Gerard Reynolds narrates, and the assignment is enormous: 33 hours and 58 minutes spanning battlefields, throne rooms, prison cells and the inside of several very different heads. His Darrow carries iron and exhaustion in equal measure, while the other strands – a poised heir, a hunted refugee, a thief chasing redemption – each get a register of their own, so you always know whose eyes you are behind within a sentence or two.

His real gift here is stamina management. The battle sequences are driven hard, all momentum and gritted teeth, but Reynolds knows when to pull back and let the political chapters breathe, which stops the listener being flattened by sheer relentlessness. Given the emotional weight of the opening act in particular, that modulation is what makes the duration feasible at all. It is a long, dark ride, and he paces it like someone who knows exactly where the finish line is.

Another listener calls the opening stretch heavy on the soul yet deeply satisfying: a colossal battle, then an aftermath built out with world-making on a grand scale, plus a wry aside wondering whether something has quietly turned half the Golds into sinister psychopaths. The main four-star reservation is stylistic – the swearing is more frequent this time, and some exchanges take on a jarringly modern, online cadence that can briefly puncture the immersion, even though the characters keep their depth and their choices ring true. The remaining verdicts amount to simple five-star satisfaction, which is much how the overall 4.7 reads.

Series veterans only, and I mean that kindly: start with Red Rising and arrive here properly armed, because the book assumes total fluency in its politics and its people.
