About this Audiobook

Brought to you by Puffin.

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series are now presented in awesome binaural audio. Listen with headphones for the full, glorious, effect!

You know how you’re supposed to come up with a list of “resolutions” at the beginning of the year to try to make yourself a better person? Well, the problem is, it’s not easy for me to think of ways to improve myself, because I’m pretty much one of the best people I know.

But Greg’s dad has other ideas. He wants Greg to change his wimpy ways, toughen up and enlist in other ‘manly’ endeavours. And when he threatens to send Greg to military academy, Greg realizes he has to shape up . . . or get shipped out.

For the best listening experience, make sure to download in high-quality.

Clara’s Verdict

Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid series has achieved something remarkable: a genuinely consistent quality across a long run of books. The third volume, The Last Straw, is arguably the sharpest of the early entries. Greg Heffley is older, the stakes feel higher, and the comedy has a slightly more desperate edge. Kinney understands children’s anxieties – particularly the terror of parental authority – with unusual precision.

This is also, frankly, one of the better audiobook productions for younger listeners currently available. The binaural audio adds genuine presence to the experience.

About the Audiobook

The Last Straw is the third book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney. It is book 3 in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Greg begins the new year confronted by his father’s attempt to toughen him up – a plan that escalates, improbably but inevitably, towards the threat of military academy. The battle of wills between Greg and his father Frank is the emotional spine of the book, but Kinney keeps the comedy in the foreground: new year’s resolutions, school chaos, and Greg’s magnificently unreliable self-assessment all contribute to a relentlessly funny 2 hours and 37 minutes.

The binaural audio production – best experienced with headphones – adds a genuinely immersive dimension to what might otherwise be a simple narration. Puffin’s decision to invest in this format for the series pays dividends for young listeners.

The Narration

Dan Russell narrates, and his performance is well-matched to Kinney’s prose. Greg’s voice requires a particular blend of self-assurance and cluelessness – Russell delivers this without tipping into caricature, which is a harder balance to strike than it appears. The supporting characters are differentiated clearly enough for younger listeners to follow without difficulty.

The binaural audio engineering deserves specific mention. At under three hours, this is a perfectly pitched listen for children aged 8 to 12, and Russell’s pacing keeps energy levels high throughout.

What Readers Say

It holds a rating of 4.8 out of 5 from 14 listener reviews on Audible.

Amazon Customer (5.0/5) writes: “My daughter loves these books and I often hear her laughing from her bedroom at night when she’s reading them.”

Christine (5.0/5) writes: “My granddaughter loved this book”

Lisa (5.0/5) writes: “My son, 9years old, loves the books.”

The pattern across reviews – parents noting their children laughing aloud, children coming back to the series repeatedly – suggests a book that has found its audience with unusual precision.

Who Should Listen?

Aimed squarely at readers aged 8 to 12, though the humour travels upwards – parents who listen alongside their children tend to find themselves more invested than expected. An ideal listen for car journeys or bedtime. If your household hasn’t encountered Greg Heffley yet, The Last Straw is a fine way to begin (though starting with book one is always recommended).

Made my son happy

Brilliant idea and written in a light hearted manner with lot of place for children to use their imagination. My 10 years old son just loved the books in this series and there is lot of space for him to write and draw his own ideas that kept him busy…
