About this Audiobook

— Love like butterfly knives in the stomach.—

Domenico Acerbi. The Villani Family’s best assassin. Ruthless. Vicious. With no patience for weakness.

Seth Villani. The Don’s son. Clueless. Stubborn. In dire need of someone to keep him in line.

Domenico Acerbi grew up ready to give his life for the Family. Ready to follow orders and exceed expectations. A proud man of honor. The last thing he wants to deal with is training the Don’s son for his future role within the organization.

Lazy, annoying, spoiled, and as hot as a Sicilian summer, Seth Villani is no mafia material. But a man who could never become a threat might just be what Domenico needs. Seth Villani wants nothing to do with the mafia. Unfortunately, he doesn’t get a say when he’s pulled back into the fold.

Thrown into a den of serpents otherwise known as the Villani Family, Seth has to find a way to navigate the maze of lies. But when Domenico Acerbi, the most vicious snake of them all, sinks his fangs into Seth, letting go becomes impossible. If Seth is doomed to follow in his father’s footsteps, he might as well enjoy himself with the most intoxicating man he’s ever met. Maybe he can even fool himself into believing that Domenico isn’t a handsome sociopath who kills for a living.

Themes: Enemies to lovers, mafia, homophobia, assassin, organized crime, forced proximity

Genre: Dark, twisted M/M romance/crime thriller

‘Guns n’ Boys’ is a gritty story containing violence, offensive language, abuse, and morally ambiguous protagonists. Behind the morbid facade, there is a splash of inappropriate dark humor, and a love story that will crawl under your skin.

Clara’s Verdict

Nearly 62 hours of dark M/M romance wrapped in Sicilian mafia violence, family loyalty, and enemies-to-lovers tension – Guns n’ Boys Box Set: Books 1-6 by K.A. Merikan is not a book I can pretend aspires to subtlety, but it is very good at exactly what it sets out to do, and what it sets out to do is substantially more demanding than the romance genre is typically given credit for. Merikan – a writing duo – have built a genuinely devoted readership on dark romance with real edge: morally complex protagonists, violence that is not aestheticised, and love stories that develop under conditions of genuine danger. Nathan Kelly narrates the entire box set, and his performance is one of the most compelling reasons to choose the audio format for this series.

About the Audiobook

The central relationship is between Domenico Acerbi – the Villani Family’s most ruthless assassin, who has built his entire identity around absolute loyalty to the organisation and absolute contempt for weakness – and Seth Villani, the Don’s son, who has no desire to join the family business and no realistic means of escape. The dynamic is classic enemies-to-lovers, but executed with unusual conviction: these are two people who have excellent, well-grounded reasons to mistrust each other and who nevertheless cannot maintain the distance that safety requires.

What distinguishes the series from lighter romance fare is its consistent commitment to the darkness of the setting. The Villani Family is genuinely dangerous and operates with genuine violence. Domenico is described accurately as “a handsome sociopath who kills for a living,” and the narrative does not attempt to rehabilitate him into something more comfortable. The homophobia present within the mafia context creates additional and sustained pressure on both central characters. Merikan writes morally ambiguous protagonists in a world without clean resolutions or easy redemption arcs, which is both the series’ particular appeal and its challenge for readers who prefer their romance more straightforwardly hopeful. At nearly 62 hours across six volumes, this is a serious commitment to a dark and involving world.

The Narration

Nathan Kelly narrates the complete box set, and his performance across the full 62 hours is one of the most impressive sustained vocal achievements I have encountered in dark romance audio. He brings genuine vocal distinction and emotional range to both central characters, handling the tonal shifts between organised crime violence, dark humour, and genuine emotional vulnerability with remarkable consistency. The Sicilian mafia atmosphere is well-served by Kelly’s deep, controlled vocal quality – he has the intensity that the material demands and the subtlety to differentiate dozens of supporting characters without confusion.

The box set format is genuinely valuable here rather than merely convenient. The six volumes tell a continuous story with a clear emotional arc, and having them collected in a single 62-hour production allows the relationship between Domenico and Seth to develop at the pace the authors intend, without the interruption of tracking down individual volumes. Kelly’s performance, consistent across the full set, creates a cumulative intimacy with both central characters that shorter listening experiences cannot achieve. By the later volumes, the listener’s investment in the outcome is genuine and significant.

What Readers Say

Rated 5.0 out of 5 from early listeners – a unanimous first response from readers who came to the box set knowing exactly what they wanted from it and found it delivered completely. The series has a devoted following who value Merikan’s commitment to genuinely dark romance without softened edges or comfortable resolutions. The box set format rewards readers who have been following the series by providing the complete narrative arc of the central relationship across all six volumes in one substantial collection.

Who Should Listen?

Readers who enjoy dark M/M romance with genuine moral complexity, organised crime settings, enemies-to-lovers tension, and protagonists who are not required to be good people. This is emphatically adult content – violence, explicit sexual material, and morally ambiguous protagonists are all present throughout – and the authors provide clear content warnings which should be read before committing. For the audience it is designed for, this box set represents exceptional value and a very substantial listen. Those new to Merikan’s work will find it a comprehensive introduction to the series. The audio format is particularly suited to this series because Kelly’s performance adds emotional texture that enhances the reading experience beyond what the text alone achieves – a genuine argument for audio as a primary format rather than a secondary one. Available on Audible UK. K.A. Merikan has published extensively in dark romance, and readers who enjoy this series will find a substantial back catalogue available across most major audiobook platforms. For readers who want to sample the series before committing to the full 62-hour box set, the individual volumes are also available separately – but given the coherence of the narrative arc, the box set represents the more satisfying and economical choice for anyone intending to read the complete series.
