Clara’s Verdict

The tenth book sends Paddington somewhere he has spent nine volumes carefully avoiding, which is school, and the results are as delightful as you would hope. Paddington on Top plays on the wonderful comic mismatch between an institution built for children and a bear who does things entirely his own way, and Michael Bond makes the most of every moment.

What continues to impress me about the series at this stage is how little it has tired. Ten books in, Bond is still finding fresh situations for his hero and still resisting the temptation to make the comedy anything other than kind. Paddington remains sincere, polite and quietly unstoppable, and that is exactly why generations of readers have taken him to their hearts.

It is a bright, warm and very funny listen, and one of the strongest-rated entries in the whole series for good reason.

About the Audiobook

Paddington on Top is the tenth book in Michael Bond’s Paddington series, and it finally catches up with the one obligation the bear has always managed to dodge. Up to now Paddington has contrived to avoid school altogether, but the Inspector himself tracks him down and packs him off, and after a single day even the teacher begins to wonder whether there is anything left to teach a certain bear from Darkest Peru.

From there the stories range across Paddington’s usual mix of everyday activities turned upside down, and when it comes to the dance floor, and in particular the rumba, he takes the cake in his own inimitable fashion. Each tale is built on the same dependable comic foundation of a small bear applying himself with total seriousness to a world that is not quite ready for him.

For more than fifty years these stories have delighted children across the globe, and this instalment shows the formula at its most polished. It works perfectly well on its own, though readers who have followed Paddington from the beginning will find it an especially satisfying stop along the way.

The Narration

Hugh Bonneville narrates, and by this point in the series his partnership with the material feels entirely natural. He delivers Paddington’s solemn logic with a beautifully straight face and lets the surrounding chaos do the rest, judging the comic rhythm of each story with real care. The schoolroom scenes in particular benefit from his light, knowing touch.

At roughly two hours and thirty-four minutes, the audiobook offers a satisfying run of stories at a length that suits families well. Bonneville’s warm, measured delivery keeps each episode clear and gives the jokes time to land, whether you are listening at bedtime or on a longer journey. His evident affection for Paddington runs through the whole production, and it is that fondness, as much as the timing, that makes his reading such a pleasure.

The schoolroom scenes are a particular treat in audio. Hearing Paddington apply his own unshakeable logic to the classroom, and later take to the dance floor for the rumba, adds an extra layer of comedy to already funny material. It makes the audiobook a warm, easy listen for a family, and an especially apt one for children with school firmly on their own minds, who may take some quiet satisfaction in watching the bear run rings around his teacher.

What Readers Say

The audiobook holds an excellent 4.7 average across more than a hundred ratings, and the reviews brim with warmth. One reader went so far as to thank Michael Bond directly for the stories, confessing that once they start one they cannot put it down and immediately want to move on to the next adventure. Another, whose own children are now grown, insisted that Paddington remains a brilliant read and marvelled at how such a polite little chap gets into so many scrapes.

The stories clearly work their magic on younger readers too. One parent described how their daughter bought this book with her own money, loved it, read it in a day and promptly bought three more. Reviewers repeatedly reach for the same words, funny, brilliant and classic, and just as often note that the comedy lands for grown-ups and children alike. It is the sort of unanimity a long-running series only earns through consistent quality.

The nostalgia is a constant refrain. More than one reviewer returning to the series after decades found the old magic entirely intact, the stories flooding back as vividly as ever. For all the delight children plainly take in Paddington, it is striking how many of the warmest reviews come from adults revisiting a character they first met long ago, and finding that a polite little bear from Darkest Peru has lost none of his power to make them laugh.

Who Should Listen?

This is an ideal family listen, and its school setting gives it a ready appeal for children navigating that world themselves. It suits young readers who love short, funny stories, and it will charm any adult with fond memories of the bear.

If you would like to see how Paddington fares in the classroom, and on the dance floor, you can Listen to Paddington on Top on Audible. The teacher, it is fair to say, never stood a chance.
