Why listen to Paddington (Chapter Books)?

If ever a book were improved by being read aloud, it is this one. Stephen Fry brings his particular blend of twinkle and gravitas to Bond’s prose, treating every small catastrophe with the seriousness Paddington himself would insist upon, and that solemnity is precisely what makes it so funny. Children hear a lovely story; adults hear the comic timing. At two hours and thirty-eight minutes it is the perfect length for young attention spans: one long car journey, or a week of bedtimes taken a chapter at a time. Though this is the second chapter book, each of Paddington’s adventures stands happily on its own, so there is no obstacle to starting here.An easy recommendation for families, nostalgic grown-ups, and anyone building a first audiobook library for a small listener.

Clara’s verdict

Clara Whitmore

4.5/5

I came to this expecting comfort and found something better: craft. The 4.7 stars from 577 listeners feel, if anything, slightly mean, because Stephen Fry’s reading of More About Paddington is close to definitive, patient, mischievous and never once condescending to its audience. My only wish is a practical one: at under three hours it is over far too soon, and you will be hunting down the rest of the series by teatime. Bond’s bear is in the safest of hands.
