Why listen to Chronicles of Ancient Darkness?

Let us be clear about the main attraction: Ian McKellen reads these books with the full weight of his craft, finding hushed menace, dry wit and genuine tenderness in Paver’s ancient world. The result is the rare family audiobook that silences the whole car; you could know nothing of the series and still be held by the voice alone. The two volumes in our catalogue, Soul Eater and Outcast, are the third and fourth books, each a manageable seven hours or so, fourteen in total. Younger listeners meeting the series here will follow well enough, though starting earlier deepens everything.Ideal for shared listening on long journeys, for confident readers of ten and up, and for any adult who suspects, correctly, that great children’s fiction is simply great fiction.

Clara’s verdict

5.0/5

I struggle to find fault. Soul Eater earns 4.7 stars from over 800 listeners, Outcast edges higher still at 4.8, and having listened I understand why: Paver’s storytelling is fierce and true, and Ian McKellen narrates as if the material were Shakespeare, which is exactly the respect children’s fiction deserves. Outcast is the standout for me, the more emotionally bruising of the two. This is one of the finest series for young listeners I have covered on this site.
