Stella Batts: Audiobooks in Order

by Courtney Sheinmel

Not every audiobook needs twenty hours to earn its keep. Courtney Sheinmel’s Stella Batts stories, each well under two hours, are proof that small can be mighty. Written for young listeners taking their first steps beyond picture books, the two instalments here, Pardon Me and Broken Birthday, hold a lovely 4.7 average across several hundred family ratings. Stella herself is the draw: a heroine whose everyday dramas feel enormous in exactly the way childhood ones do.

Why listen to Stella Batts?

Audio is arguably the ideal format for this series. At around an hour and a half per book, a Stella Batts story fits neatly into a car journey, a rainy afternoon or a week of bedtimes, and children who are not yet reading fluently can enjoy chapter-book storytelling without any struggle on the page. There is no need to be precious about order. Pardon Me is book three and Broken Birthday is book ten, and either works perfectly well as a first taste; the latter carries the marginally higher rating at 4.7. I would suggest these for listeners of roughly five to eight, and for parents who want gentle, funny, real-world stories rather than another franchise of wizards and monsters.

Clara’s verdict

Clara Whitmore

4.5/5

I came to Stella Batts expecting something slight and found something quietly well made. Families clearly agree: Broken Birthday edges it at 4.7 stars, with Pardon Me just behind on 4.6, and nearly four hundred ratings say the quality holds from book three all the way to book ten. My only real caveat is appetite; at ninety-odd minutes each, a keen child will devour one per sitting and demand the next. As problems go, that is a rather good one.
