Thursday Murder Club Mysteries: Audiobooks in Order

by Richard Osman

Four retirees in a peaceful Kent retirement village meet every Thursday to pore over cold cases, until a real murder lands on their doorstep. Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club Mysteries pair proper whodunnit plotting with a very British wit and a surprising amount of heart. The hook is the company: Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron and Ibrahim are the sort of characters you genuinely miss between books.

Why listen to Thursday Murder Club Mysteries?

Cosy crime might be the single most forgiving genre for audio: dialogue-driven, warmly comic and paced for a Sunday afternoon rather than a sprint. Each instalment runs roughly 11 to 12 and a half hours, so the whole quartet fits inside 47 hours of listening.Interestingly, listeners rate the sequels above the debut. The Thursday Murder Club opens at 4.4 stars while The Man Who Died Twice, The Bullet That Missed and The Last Devil to Die all hold 4.7, evidence of a series that settles into its stride. Start at the beginning regardless; the friendships are the plot.Ideal for listeners who like their murders gentle, their humour dry and their detectives old enough to know better.

Clara’s verdict

Clara Whitmore

4.5/5

I came to Osman late and slightly sceptical of the celebrity author phenomenon, and I was won over within a chapter. The listener numbers mirror my experience: the debut is good at 4.4 stars, but the three sequels each hold a steady 4.7, and The Last Devil to Die in particular carries an emotional weight I did not expect from cosy crime. If the first book charms you, the series only deepens from there.
