About this Audiobook

Brought to you by Penguin.

From award-winning actor and food obsessive Stanley Tucci comes an intimate and charming memoir of life in and out of the kitchen.

Before Stanley Tucci became a household name with The Devil Wears Prada, The Hunger Games and the perfect Negroni, he grew up in an Italian American family that spent every night around the table. He shared the magic of those meals with us in The Tucci Cookbook and The Tucci Table, and now he takes us beyond the recipes and into the stories behind them.

Taste is a reflection on the intersection of food and life, filled with anecdotes about growing up in Westchester, New York, preparing for and filming the foodie films Big Night and Julie & Julia, falling in love over dinner and teaming up with his wife to create conversation-starting meals for their children. Each morsel of this gastronomic journey through good times and bad, five-star meals and burnt dishes, is as heartfelt and delicious as the last.

Written with Stanley’s signature wry humour and nostalgia, Taste is a heartwarming story that will be irresistible for anyone who knows the power of a home-cooked meal.

Clara’s Verdict

Stanley Tucci narrating his own food memoir is one of those listening experiences that feels almost unfairly good. His voice – warm, unhurried, slightly self-deprecating – is the voice of someone who has genuinely thought about what it means to eat well, and about the ways in which meals accumulate into a life. Taste is not a cookery book in audio form. It is a memoir in which food provides both the structure and the emotional language, and it works beautifully.

I approached this with modest expectations – celebrity memoirs can coast on goodwill – and came away considerably more impressed than I’d anticipated. Tucci writes with genuine craft, and his editors have clearly resisted the temptation to stuff every anecdote in. This is a considered book, shaped by someone who takes writing as seriously as he takes cooking.

About the Audiobook

The narrative begins in Tucci’s Italian-American childhood in Westchester, where the table was the unambiguous centre of family life, and moves outward through a career that has taken him from struggling actor to household name, via a series of food-related films – Big Night, Julie & Julia – that sit at the intersection of his two great subjects. He writes about falling in love over dinner, about cooking with his late first wife Kate, about the harrowing period in which oral cancer robbed him temporarily of the ability to taste anything at all. That section is handled with remarkable restraint – he doesn’t wring it for pathos – and is more affecting for it.

The recipes scattered throughout the text are described rather than listed, which suits the audio format perfectly. You’re not trying to follow along; you’re being told a story in which food is both the occasion and the point. Tucci’s Taste sits comfortably alongside the best of the genre: Fisher, David, Root. It’s that good.

The Narration

Tucci narrates his own memoir, and the result is essentially the best version of this book you could hear. He reads with the confidence of someone who knows exactly how his own sentences should sound, and his pacing reflects the pleasure he clearly takes in the material. The Italian names and family anecdotes arrive with authentic warmth – this is not a performance but a recounting, in the best sense. Listeners who’ve watched Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy will recognise the same voice and cadence, now given more room to breathe.

What Readers Say

Taste holds a 4.6 rating from Audible listeners. Carolyn called it “a great read” that offers “a good insight into family meals” alongside candid restaurant recommendations. Lauren, reading it on holiday in Italy, found the embedded recipes added “a new dimension” that she “thoroughly enjoyed.” Sue M, a cancer survivor herself, described it as “humbling, fascinating, humorous, and above all uplifting,” noting that it accompanied her through her final treatment session. “Goodness me, it’s Sandra D” offered the most complete assessment: “Tucci blends personal anecdotes with culinary reflections in a way that’s both entertaining and deeply relatable,” singling out the oral cancer section as making “his love for food all the more precious.”

Who Should Listen?

This is the audiobook to recommend to anyone who loves food, film, or simply a well-told story about a life well-lived. It’s an excellent gift listen for parents, partners, or friends who consider themselves serious about cooking or who have a soft spot for the Italy-adjacent world Tucci inhabits. It’s also – and this matters – one of the rare celebrity memoirs that holds up to a second listen. Put it on in the kitchen.

I read this while on holiday in Italy. It's littered with recipes so you can almost taste and smell the experiences within the book. I can't say I've followed any of the recipies yet but it adds a new dimension to reading which I thoroughly enjoyed.
