Cosy mysteries live or die on the likeability of their protagonist, and Jodie “Nosey” Parker is immediately good company. A former Met detective who’s retreated to coastal Cornwall to raise her daughter and run a catering business, Jodie has the kind of practical competence and wry self-awareness that makes you root for her from the first chapter. When the bride vanishes at the wedding she’s catering – an ex-boyfriend’s wedding, no less – the scene is set for something that’s simultaneously a proper whodunnit and an affectionate portrait of small-town British life. The first book in the Nosey Parker Cozy Mysteries series, originally published as Murder on the Menu, its reissue under the current title better captures what it actually is.
Fiona Leitch writes with genuine warmth and a light comic touch. The cosy mystery genre has had a renaissance in recent years, with British settings at the forefront of it, and Leitch understands why: the specific pleasure of the cosy isn’t about sanitising violence, but about using a community’s response to disruption as a way of exploring that community’s values and secrets. Cornwall, with its strong local identity and its mix of ancient families and newcomers, is particularly well suited to the form.

The hint of romance is pleasingly understated: there are intimations of something developing without it overwhelming the central investigation, which is exactly the balance the genre requires.
The dynamic between Jodie and her daughter Daisy adds emotional texture that lifts the book beyond pure puzzle mechanics. The fundamental question – can Jodie build the quieter life she came home for, or will she always be drawn back towards danger? – gives the series a natural longer arc, and the ending leaves enough threads unresolved to make the second book feel essential rather than optional. At under seven hours, this is a brisk, satisfying listen that goes down like a good pasty on a Cornish seafront: exactly what you wanted, properly made.
The Narration
Zara Ramm gives Jodie a voice that feels authentically grounded – there’s no attempt to make her sound glamorous or hard-boiled, which is entirely right for a character who has deliberately chosen ordinariness and keeps being dragged out of it. Ramm captures the slightly exhausted warmth of a single mother who has chosen a quieter life and isn’t sure whether to resent or enjoy the fact that she can’t quite commit to it. The Cornish accents are handled with sufficient lightness to add local colour without becoming caricature, and the comic timing in the sharper exchanges is genuinely well-judged.

Food preparation is patience, precision, and the management of multiple things happening at once; it’s not unlike detective work, and Leitch doesn’t miss that parallel. The scenes in which Jodie is simultaneously managing a professional crisis and noticing something the police have missed are among the book’s most satisfying moments.
