About this Audiobook

It’s official: my step bro is the biggest himbo ever to himbo.

He’s a massive blond beefcake with a soft heart and an over-eager smile. The mere sight of him incites a shaking hot rage in me.

He’s everywhere. He’s around me all the time. So sweet and gentle that it makes me feel wild. I see him and smell him everywhere. When I can’t see him or smell him, I hear him. The wall between our bedrooms is paper thin. I can’t help it – I hear what he does in his room when he thinks he’s alone. I hear everything.

I know I shouldn’t do it. It’s obviously a terrible, terrible idea. Still, I bide my time. I wait, and I wait, and finally, I pounce.

“Luke! I know what you’re doing in there.”

Clara’s Verdict

The MM romance market moves fast, and the stepbrother trope has been done so many times that it takes real craft to make it feel fresh. Jesse H. Reign manages it. The Step Bro Situation – Book 1 in the Situationship Series – works not because it upends expectations, but because it executes the formula with warmth, self-awareness, and genuinely likeable characters. Jesse (the narrator, not the author – yes, they share a name) is prickly in a way that’s earned rather than contrived, and Luke, his “massive blond beefcake” step-sibling, is written with an affection that stops just short of being too good to be true. Ellis Evans’s narration captures both voices with real distinction. This is low-angst MM romance done well: the kind of book you finish in a weekend and immediately want to recommend.

About the Audiobook

Jesse has returned to the US after living with his mother, moving in with his father, stepmother, and her son Luke. The setup is deliberately confined – paper-thin walls, shared spaces, forced proximity – and Reign uses these constraints to generate the kind of slow-burn tension that romance readers live for. Jesse’s initial hostility towards Luke (who is, by any objective measure, relentlessly pleasant) is funny and recognisable: the irritation of someone who knows they’re behaving badly but can’t quite stop themselves.

The story doesn’t rush towards its resolution, which is to its credit. The relationship develops at a pace that feels organic, and Reign takes time to explore Jesse’s emotional backstory – particularly his complicated relationship with his mother – even if some readers felt this dimension could have been developed further. The series opener runs to 7 hours and 27 minutes, a satisfying length for a standalone romance that also functions as an effective series hook. Published by Podium Audio in October 2023.

The Narration

Ellis Evans narrates in a single-voice style that nonetheless differentiates clearly between Jesse and Luke – a considerable technical achievement when two characters spend significant time in close proximity. Evans captures Jesse’s defensive wit and Luke’s open-hearted warmth without caricaturing either, and the emotional beats land with appropriate weight. The pacing is well-judged for the genre: unhurried in the quiet moments, energised during the scenes of tension or connection. For listeners new to MM romance in audio, this is an excellent introduction to what good genre narration sounds like.

What Readers Say

The audiobook carries a 4.3-star rating. Mrs Hubby noted that “the book actually got better as the relationship developed,” praising the “low angst and some very supportive people.” Michelle H., reviewing the first entry in the Situationship Series, described it as “a really cute love story” and appreciated how Luke helps Jesse identify his personal issues. AllTheDarkVibes, who had kept the book on their to-be-read list for some time, found it impossible to put down: “I adored these characters especially Luke.” The 3-star review from Kellymg78 reflects a small number of readers who felt the mother relationship wasn’t fully explored – a fair point, though it doesn’t undermine what’s otherwise a solidly delivered romance.

Who Should Listen?

Perfect for MM romance fans who like their tension served warm rather than scorching, with a side of found-family dynamics and genuine emotional stakes. If you enjoy low-angst queer romance that takes its characters seriously, this will satisfy. Series readers will want to continue into subsequent Situationship books; newcomers to the genre could do far worse than starting here. Available on Audible UK.
