The MM romance market moves fast, and the stepbrother trope has been done so many times that it takes real craft to make it feel fresh. Jesse H. Reign manages it. The Step Bro Situation – Book 1 in the Situationship Series – works not because it upends expectations, but because it executes the formula with warmth, self-awareness, and genuinely likeable characters. Jesse (the narrator, not the author – yes, they share a name) is prickly in a way that’s earned rather than contrived, and Luke, his “massive blond beefcake” step-sibling, is written with an affection that stops just short of being too good to be true. The pacing is well-judged for the genre: unhurried in the quiet moments, energised during the scenes of tension or connection. For listeners new to MM romance in audio, this is an excellent introduction to what good genre narration sounds like.
