Clara’s Verdict

Robert Muchamore’s CHERUB series occupies a peculiar and rather wonderful niche in British children’s fiction: spy thrillers where the operatives are teenagers, the tradecraft is meticulously researched, and the moral questions are treated with considerably more seriousness than the genre usually permits. The General is one of the stronger entries in the sequence – a war-game adventure that manages to be simultaneously enormous fun and quietly thought-provoking about the nature of combat, strategy, and what it means to ask young people to do adult things.

I have recommended this series to more parents than I can count over the past decade. The books are pacey, the characters feel real, and they treat their young readers as intelligent. That is a rarer combination than it should be in children’s publishing, and Muchamore has maintained it consistently across more than a dozen volumes.

About the Audiobook

The world’s largest urban warfare training compound sits in the Nevada desert near Las Vegas, and forty British commandos are about to be hunted by an entire American battalion. Their commander, however, has an unconventional ace up his sleeve: ten CHERUB agents, children whose very youth renders them invisible to adult suspicion. The adults running the war game simply never consider that the scruffy kid sitting quietly in the corner might be gathering intelligence – and that, as any CHERUB reader knows, is precisely the point.

The war-game premise allows Muchamore to explore strategy, teamwork, and leadership in a setting that feels genuinely exciting rather than didactic. The novel balances large-scale tactical sequences with smaller, more intimate moments of character development – the agents navigating the emotional complexity of operating in a grey zone between childhood and professional duty. The underlying theme – that children can be extraordinarily capable when trusted with genuine responsibility – runs through the entire CHERUB canon, and The General explores it through a particularly cinematic lens without losing sight of the human stakes.

The US military setting gives the book an international flavour that distinguishes it from the more London-centric earlier entries in the series, and Muchamore makes good use of the desert landscape and the scale of American military operations as a backdrop for his teenage protagonists.

The Narration

Simon Scardifield has been the voice of CHERUB from early in the series’ audio life, and his performance here is assured and energetic. He handles the large cast with clarity, distinguishing between characters without resorting to caricature, and his pacing suits the novel’s considerable action sequences well. At six hours and twenty-nine minutes, this is an ideal audiobook for younger listeners – long enough to feel substantial, short enough to hold attention across a half-term break without demanding the stamina of a longer adult novel. The recording quality is clean and professional throughout.

What Readers Say

The CHERUB series commands fierce loyalty among its readership, and The General is well regarded within that community. Listeners consistently praise the plausibility of the military scenarios alongside the consistently entertaining quality of the action. The series as a whole is frequently cited by parents as one of the few book series that will actually tempt reluctant readers – particularly boys in the ten-to-fourteen age range – away from screens and into sustained reading. In my experience, that is among the highest recommendations a children’s book can receive. The combination of genuine danger, competent young protagonists, and satisfying plot mechanics is precisely calibrated for its audience.

Who Should Listen?

This is aimed at readers aged ten and upwards, though the CHERUB books have a significant adult following who enjoy them alongside their children without any particular embarrassment. They are particularly well suited to young people who enjoy action and adventure but find more traditional children’s fiction too gentle or too slow – Muchamore doesn’t talk down to his audience, and that comes through in every chapter. The war-game setting will particularly appeal to anyone with an interest in strategy, military history, or tactical problem-solving. For those new to the series, starting at book one is recommended, but The General works perfectly well as a standalone introduction to the world.

The CHERUB books are available on Audible UK, Kobo, and Scribd, and the series rewards binge-listening in a way that few children’s audiobook collections do. Once a household starts, the pattern is reliably the same: one book finished, the next immediately queued. Muchamore has written over a dozen volumes across the main series and the Henderson’s Boys companion sequence, so the supply is generous.

Whether you are a returning reader or discovering CHERUB for the first time, The General is a confident and entertaining entry in a series that has earned its place in the British children’s audiobook canon.
