Sally Rigby has quietly built one of the more satisfying detective series in contemporary British crime fiction, and this three-book collection – narrated by the excellent Jonathan Keeble – is an ideal introduction to both the world and the characters. Sebastian Clifford is a genuinely unusual detective: a former police officer with a photographic memory who becomes a reluctant private investigator after a professional scandal ends his career. His working partnership with Detective Constable Birdie is one of the pleasures of the series – an unlikely collaboration between two people who need each other more than either wants to admit.
At 22 hours and 17 minutes, this is a substantial listen, but the three books move at very different paces and the variety keeps the collection engaging throughout. Rigby is good at plot mechanics – her mysteries are genuinely puzzling – but her real strength is character, and both Clifford and Birdie become more interesting with each book.

Web of Lies opens with Clifford reluctantly agreeing to investigate his cousin’s husband’s suspicious death – officially ruled a suicide, but with enough loose threads to pull. His photographic memory makes him an exceptional investigator, but it also makes him difficult to work with. The introduction of Birdie – underutilised, sharp, and not about to give him access to police records without getting something in return – sets the dynamic for the series.
Speak No Evil takes the pair in a more emotionally complex direction: a young girl found abandoned on the streets of Market Harborough, barely speaking, her identity unknown. Birdie’s instinct that the child is gifted rather than impaired drives the investigation, and what Clifford and Birdie uncover is darker than either anticipated.
Never Too Late brings a personal dimension to Clifford’s caseload when DCI Whitney Walker – a familiar face to readers of Rigby’s Cavendish and Walker series – asks him to investigate an attack that left her brother with permanent brain damage. Old secrets resurface; old wounds are reopened. The crossover with Rigby’s other series is handled with enough clarity that new readers are not lost, but fans will find it genuinely rewarding.
The Narration
Jonathan Keeble is one of the finest voices in British crime audiobooks, and he is excellent here. Clifford’s slight emotional detachment – a product of his extraordinary memory and his professional trauma – is present in Keeble’s delivery without being overdone. Birdie’s warmth and directness is equally well-rendered. Keeble differentiates the characters cleanly, manages the market town setting with appropriate register, and sustains energy across all three books without allowing the tone to flatten. A strong performance throughout.
What Readers Say
The collection holds a 4.4 rating, with readers consistently praising the character work and the quality of the mysteries. “The characters are fun, plausible, and interesting,” wrote one reviewer – adding that the back stories develop convincingly across the three books. Who Should Listen?
Excellent for fans of British procedural crime fiction who enjoy character-driven mysteries with genuine detective logic behind them. The Market Harborough setting gives the books a pleasingly specific sense of place – neither London nor the isolated rural communities that populate much of British crime – and Clifford himself is the kind of complicated, socially awkward protagonist who rewards close attention. If you enjoy Ann Cleeves or Robert Galbraith, the Clifford series is worth your time.
