Clara’s Verdict
There are gardening books, and then there are books about what gardening actually means. Monty Don’s Down to Earth is firmly in the second category, and it’s been on my list of recommended non-fiction audiobooks since I first listened to it years ago. Published in 2017 and available in audio since 2019, it remains one of the most honest and unhurried books about gardening I’ve encountered. The fact that Don narrates it himself makes it something genuinely special – this is a man reading his own words about things he has loved for decades, in the voice that sounds precisely as it does on Friday evenings watching Gardeners’ World, which is to say entirely reassuring and completely trustworthy.
About the Audiobook
Don’s stated intention is explicit: this is not a comprehensive gardening manual. He says so plainly at the outset. It is instead a distillation of fifty years of gardening experience – a personal, discursive, deeply felt journey through the seasons, the challenges, and the quiet satisfactions of working with soil and living things.
The book covers a wide and varied range of subjects: nature and seasonality, colour and design in the garden, pests and flowering shrubs, containers, soil health, and the month-by-month tasks Don undertakes in his own celebrated garden at Longmeadow. But what elevates it above the practical is Don’s genuine philosophical engagement with why we garden at all. He believes, and argues with quiet persistence, that gardening is one of the great secrets of living well – that the relationship between human beings and the act of growing things is ancient, necessary, and profoundly restorative. He writes about it with the conviction of someone who has tested this belief across a lifetime, including during periods of serious personal difficulty.
The audio version does sacrifice the photographs that accompany the print edition – Longmeadow in all its seasonal variety is extraordinary to look at – but Don’s prose is vivid enough that the garden takes shape in the mind as he describes it, and the absence of the photographs is not fatal to the experience. For those who want both, the print and audio editions work excellently in combination.
The Narration
Monty Don reading his own book is, I want to say plainly, a genuine pleasure. His voice carries the cadences of someone who has thought deeply about these subjects for decades and has been talking about plants and gardens in public for much of his adult life – through his own serious difficulties, including a period of depression he has written about elsewhere with unusual openness. There’s no performative quality to his reading – no attempt to be more than himself, no dramatisation for audio effect. He speaks as he writes, and he writes as he thinks: with warmth, precision, and occasional lyrical beauty that earns rather than announces itself. At just under eight hours, the audiobook never overstays its welcome, and the seasonal structure gives the listen a natural shape. Notably, this is one of those rare cases where the self-narrated version is clearly preferable to any professional alternative: the authority and intimacy Don brings to the material is irreplaceable.

This is also an excellent choice as a gift for a gardener – the kind of book that opens up a deeper and more meaningful conversation about why we spend time with growing things at all, and what that time gives back.
