About this Audiobook

‘The thrill is that you’re actually figuring it out on your own. You’re engaging with another language, not just parroting it… It’s an excellent way to start, and leaves the listener thinking, Hey, Ich kann do dis.’ – New Yorker, David Sedaris, humorist and author, on learning German with the Michel Thomas Method

Looking for a convenient language course that fits your lifestyle and gets you speaking a new language in a matter of weeks, not years? The original no-books, no-homework, no-memorizing method is in tune with the way the brain prefers to receive, store and retrieve information. You’ll stick with it because you’ll love it.

* Pick up German naturally and unforgettably without strain or stress
* Learn from listening and speaking, without the pressure of writing or memorizing
* Build up your German in manageable steps by thinking out answers for yourself

WHY IS THE METHOD SO SUCCESSFUL?

‘What you understand, you know; and what you know, you don’t forget.’ – Michel Thomas

Before there were algorithms, there was Michel Thomas. For over 50 years he worked on decoding languages by breaking them down into their most essential component parts. These ‘building blocks’ are introduced to the learner sequentially in such a way that you reconstruct the language for yourself – to form your own sentences, to say what you want, when you want. This unique method draws on the principles of instructional psychology and works with the way your brain prefers to receive, store and retrieve information. Knowledge is structured and organized so that you absorb the language easily and don’t forget it. The method is designed to eliminate the stress which prevents you from relaxing and allowing the brain to work in the way which accepts learning in a seemingly painless, very exciting and highly motivating way.

HOW DO THE COURSES WORK?

‘All stress inhibits true and effective learning’ – Michel Thomas

During the course, you will join Michel Thomas and two students in a live lesson, learning from both their successes and their mistakes to keep you motivated and involved throughout the course. You, as the learner, become the third student and participate actively in the class. Within the very first hour you will be able to construct simple phrases by listening and thinking out answers for yourself without the pressure of writing or stress of having to memorize. You will learn at your own pace, pausing and repeating where necessary, and complete the course in about 20-30 hours. By the end of the course, you will understand and have the confidence to speak basic German. You can continue to review and practice with the additional 2-hour Review course. *Note that the first hour of this course is the same as the Start German ‘taster’ course.

WHAT WILL I ACTUALLY ACHIEVE?

‘I am the architect who builds the house. It’s up to you to decorate it.’ – Michel Thomas

The Michel Thomas Method will help you kick-start, continue, and flourish in your German language learning journey. It is not intended to get you perfectly fluent, but it will get you speaking and using German, with proper pronunciation, faster than any other method. It is designed to give you a strong foundation and good working knowledge of a language from which you can expand and later ‘add decoration’ to. It is a rapid method for learning, that requires only concentration on the part of the learner.

Clara’s Verdict

Michel Thomas died in 2005, and his language courses remain among the most effective audio-based language learning tools ever produced. The Foundation German course is the essential entry point: nine hours of classroom instruction in which Thomas teaches two students – and, by careful design, you, listening at home – the building blocks of German from absolute scratch. The New Yorker’s David Sedaris, who used the method to learn German, described it as “an excellent way to start, and leaves the listener thinking, Hey, Ich kann do dis.” That casual, unconscious switch into the target language is, in miniature, exactly what Thomas achieves and what makes the method so striking.

For anyone who has tried and failed to learn German through textbooks, grammar drills, evening classes, or smartphone apps, this course offers a genuinely different approach to the same problem – and it has the results to justify the claim.

About the Audiobook

Thomas’s method is built on a governing principle: “What you understand, you know; and what you know, you don’t forget.” Rather than presenting German as a set of forms and exceptions to be memorised in sequence, Thomas identifies the structural parallels between English and German – the “building blocks” that allow learners to construct correct sentences through logical deduction rather than rote recall. German, it turns out, is far more learnable than its reputation suggests, once you understand the underlying patterns rather than trying to memorise surface forms in isolation.

The course is structured as a live classroom session. Thomas teaches two students who make mistakes, self-correct, and occasionally flounder – and those moments are pedagogically valuable, because they model the learning process rather than presenting an airbrushed ideal of effortless acquisition. Within the first hour, listeners can form simple German phrases independently. By the end of the nine-hour foundation course, they have a working grammar of basic German that feels genuinely owned rather than borrowed.

A two-hour Review course is included. A downloadable PDF accompanies the audio. Thomas is explicit about the recommended sequence: Foundation, then Language Builder, then Intermediate, then Vocabulary, then Insider’s. The method is sequential and cumulative; each stage builds directly on the last.

The Narration

Michel Thomas himself is the voice of all his courses, and the experience of listening to him teach is unlike any other language instruction available in audio. He is unhurried, precise, and genuinely kind in his corrections – a quality that matters more than it might initially seem when you are an adult learner making mistakes. His accent is distinctively mid-European: Thomas was a Polish-born polyglot who survived the Holocaust, served as an intelligence officer, and spent decades in America building his reputation as a teacher of remarkable effectiveness. His approach to German reflects a deep structural knowledge of the language that most native-speaker teachers lack, simply because they have never needed to think analytically about what makes German learnable from outside.

The recording quality reflects the original sessions from 1999, and the sound is noticeably dated by current standards. The clarity of the instruction more than compensates.

What Readers Say

The Foundation German course in its newly uploaded 2026 edition does not yet carry a significant Audible UK review count. However, the Michel Thomas Method has accumulated decades of documented effectiveness across all its languages, and the German course in particular has generated consistent enthusiasm wherever it has been reviewed. Learners consistently describe it as the most painless German instruction they have encountered. The knowledge sticks, reviewers report, because it is built on understanding rather than memorisation – and that distinction turns out to matter enormously over time.

Who Should Listen?

Absolute beginners who want to build a solid, confident working foundation in German before progressing to more complex material. Also highly effective for false beginners – those who have studied German at school or in evening classes, acquired a patchy collection of vocabulary and grammar rules, but never achieved the ability to actually speak or understand the language with any confidence. The method is not designed as a standalone route to full fluency, but as the first stage of a systematic approach that, followed through all five levels, produces functional, confident German speakers. Particularly well-suited to adult learners who have found grammar-based instruction frustrating, anxiety-inducing, or simply ineffective in the past.
