About this Audiobook

A unique and perfectly brilliant way of teaching languages. – Stephen Fry in Rescuing the Spectacled Bear

Looking for a convenient intermediate language course that fits your lifestyle and gets you speaking a new language in a matter of weeks, not years? The original no-books, no-homework, no-memorizing method is in tune with the way the brain prefers to receive, store and retrieve information. You’ll stick with it because you’ll love it.

Improve your German naturally and unforgettably without strain or stress.

Learn from listening and speaking, without the pressure of writing or memorizing.

Build up your German in manageable steps by thinking out answers for yourself.

How does it work?
For 50 years, Michel Thomas worked on decoding languages into their most essential component parts. These ‘building blocks’ are introduced sequentially so that you reconstruct the language for yourself – to form your own sentences, to say what you want, when you want. Within the very first hour you will be able to construct complex phrases by listening and thinking out answers for yourself without the pressure of writing or stress of having to memorize.

You will learn at your own pace, pausing and responding where necessary, and complete the 4-hour course in about 15-20 hours. By the end of the Intermediate course, you will have a solid working knowledge of German and be able to express yourself confidently in a variety of situations. You can continue to review and practice with the additional 1-hour Review course.

WHAT IS NEXT?
After Intermediate, we recommend doing the Vocabulary Course.
Generally, this is the recommended order for the Michel Thomas language courses:
1. Foundation
2. Language Builder
3. Intermediate
4. Vocabulary Course
5. Insider’s

Clara’s Verdict

The Michel Thomas Method occupies an interesting position in the language-learning landscape: too structured to be called immersive, too unusual to sit comfortably alongside conventional courses, and yet consistently producing results that more orthodox approaches fail to match. Stephen Fry’s description – “a unique and perfectly brilliant way of teaching languages” – is not hyperbole. Thomas spent fifty years decoding languages into their essential components, and the method that emerged is genuinely unlike anything else in the category.

This intermediate German course picks up where the foundation course left off, completing the modal verb framework and building towards genuine conversational competence. At around five-to-six hours of audio (with recommended engagement time of fifteen to twenty hours for the full intermediate material), it’s an efficient and serious piece of instruction.

About the Audiobook

The Michel Thomas Method works by presenting language as a logical system rather than a set of memorised responses. Thomas – himself a polyglot who spoke seven languages – identified the structural patterns that give each language its grammar, then sequenced those patterns so that learners reconstruct the language for themselves. The method deliberately removes the anxiety of traditional language learning: there are no tests, no homework, no requirement to memorise, and the listener is explicitly told they are not responsible for remembering anything.

The intermediate German course completes the modal tense system – could have, would have, should have, ought to have – which is the framework that gives learners genuine expressive range beyond the present tense. The course includes a full review section (approximately one hour) allowing rapid revision of core structures without sitting through the classroom dialogue again. This is thoughtfully designed for returning learners.

A supplementary PDF is included with the purchase, accessible through your Audible library. The recommended progression after this course is the Vocabulary Course, which builds on the grammatical framework established here.

The Narration

Michel Thomas himself narrates, recorded during actual teaching sessions – what you hear is Thomas working with two students in real time, correcting, encouraging, and building confidence. This gives the course an immediacy that studio recordings lack. You learn alongside the students, which normalises mistakes and reduces the anxiety that typically accompanies language practice.

Thomas’s voice carries the calm authority of a gifted teacher who has explained these concepts thousands of times and knows exactly where learners will struggle and where they’ll surprise themselves. The audio quality reflects its era, but it’s entirely adequate for the purpose.

What Readers Say

With a perfect 5.0 rating from one listener, the review sample is small but detailed and positive. The reviewer – who describes the course as completing the modal system and covering all the core language efficiently – praises both the teaching methodology and the inclusion of the review section, which allows revision “without having to listen to the two students that Michel is teaching.” They explicitly recommend continuing to the Language Builder course after completion.

The broader Michel Thomas Method catalogue has a long track record, with Stephen Fry’s endorsement representing a high-profile but genuine response to genuinely effective instruction.

Who Should Listen?

Anyone who has completed the Michel Thomas Foundation German course, or who has an existing basic grounding in German and wants to improve without the formality of a class or the rote drudgery of a textbook. This method is particularly suited to people who have felt that traditional language courses don’t match how their brain actually acquires language.

It’s worth noting the recommended sequence: Foundation, Language Builder, Intermediate, Vocabulary Course, Insider’s. The intermediate course presupposes familiarity with the foundation material – this isn’t an entry point for complete beginners. If you’re returning to German after a gap, start with the Foundation to rebuild the framework before attempting the intermediate material.
