About this Audiobook

I cast my eyes over the impressive meal I’ve cooked and the half-empty crystal wine glasses. As our guests smile graciously, I squeeze my husband’s shoulder. It’s vital I get his friends to like me. To believe this version of me. Because I’ll do anything to stop them learning the truth…

Ever since I met my handsome husband Dr Gabe Bonneville, I started playing the role of the perfect housewife. He works hard as a surgeon, so I look after our home, and throw elaborate dinner parties with champagne cocktails for his best friends Hugh and Anita. He’s my safe place and my chance to have the family I’ve always wanted.

I’ve managed to hide the mornings when I wake up and see a face in the shadows. I haven’t told Gabe the truth about the woman who raised me, or told him about the therapy I’ve been getting so my secrets stay hidden in the dark. I haven’t questioned his past so he doesn’t ask about mine. I see the way Anita looks at him sometimes, but I’ll never say a word.

Until the letter arrives at the front door. The beautiful, expensive card shakes in my hand as I read the neat black handwriting.

Someone knows I’m not just a housewife. And the lies I’ve told will be all that’s left when I disappear…

Clara’s Verdict

Anna-Lou Weatherley has built a devoted readership on the back of her Detective Dan Riley series, and The Housewife’s Secret (book 7 in the Detective Dan Riley series) demonstrates exactly why. This is psychological thriller operating at the sharper end of its genre – a novel built around the interlocking secrets of people who present perfectly at dinner parties whilst concealing something they cannot afford anyone to find. James Lailey’s narration adds another layer of unease to an already unsettling story.

About the Audiobook

Darcie Bonneville has constructed a life that looks, from the outside, immaculate. Married to a surgeon, mistress of an enviable home, she hosts dinner parties with champagne cocktails for her husband Gabe’s closest friends. She is the perfect housewife. Or so the performance requires.

Beneath the surface, Darcie carries secrets she has never shared with Gabe: the truth about her past, the woman who raised her, the therapy she attends in silence. She has stayed quiet about the way his friend’s wife looks at him. She has not questioned his own history. And then a card arrives – expensive paper, neat black handwriting: Found you.

Weatherley is skilled at constructing a particular kind of dread: the domestic thriller that makes the familiar feel threatening. At nearly ten hours, there is room for the story to breathe, and she uses that space to develop Darcie as a complex, sympathetic figure rather than simply a plot device. Detective Dan Riley’s investigation drives the second half with urgency, but it is Darcie’s interiority that makes this genuinely affecting rather than merely tense.

The Narration

James Lailey narrates, and his controlled, precise delivery suits the material well. He handles the tension between Darcie’s composed exterior and her internal panic without overplaying either – a restraint that serves the novel’s psychological architecture. At 9 hours and 42 minutes, the pacing holds throughout.

What Readers Say

Listeners have rated The Housewife’s Secret 4.4/5 on Audible UK. Fans of the Dan Riley series were enthusiastic: ‘Dan at his best,’ declared one reviewer, and another called it ‘completely unputdownable.’ Readers new to the series reported that it reads well as a standalone, with enough backstory woven in to orient new listeners without alienating those who have followed Riley from the beginning. One reader found the ending overlong, which is a fair observation – Weatherley occasionally leans toward the expansive in her resolutions. The majority, however, found the whole experience thoroughly gripping.

Who Should Listen?

Listeners who enjoy psychological thrillers with a strong domestic setting – think domestic noir with a procedural backbone – will find this very much in their territory. Existing fans of the Dan Riley series will want this on their list, and newcomers to Weatherley’s work will find it a very satisfying introduction. It rewards listeners who enjoy unreliable domestic surfaces and the slow reveal of what lies beneath.

*Dan at his best*

To the outside world 4 people having a wonderful dinner party is innocent enough. Darcie is carrying a secret, something that she wants no one to discover, not even her husband Gabe. Recently she was involved in a random act of kindness that catapulted her into the limelight. Something she…

Good but too lengthy

I have read all of Annalou’s books and like her voice much. I thought this latest book had a reasonable story, best bits were when the police were involved but felt it dragged on too much at the end.

There are some books that fall in your lap and just completely unputdownable… this is one of them. Now although this is part of a series, book #7, it is totally readable as a standalone. This is now the 4th book I've read of the series and I devoured it as…
