Who is Yuval Noah Harari?

Yuval Noah Harari, born in 1976, is an Israeli medievalist and military historian who became one of the world’s most recognisable public intellectuals almost by accident. A professor of history at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, he turned his lectures to an undergraduate world history class into Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, published in 2011 – and the book became a global bestseller. Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow followed in 2016, then 21 Lessons for the 21st Century in 2018 and Nexus, on the history of information networks, in 2024.

His work ranges across free will, consciousness, intelligence, happiness, suffering and the role of storytelling in human evolution. It is worth saying honestly that while readers have embraced him in their millions, his books have been received far more coolly in academic circles – the price, perhaps, of painting on a 70,000-year canvas.

Harari’s great gift is narrative compression: whole epochs folded into clean, confident storylines, which makes him unusually listenable for a historian of ideas. Sapiens is the essential audiobook – his account of the cognitive revolution and humanity’s climb to apex predator remains provocative whether or not you accept every leap. Homo Deus turns the telescope forward, asking what happens when intelligent organisms are overtaken by their own creations.

For UK listeners, the sensible approach is to enjoy the sweep and keep a pinch of salt to hand. Few audiobooks generate more conversation per listening hour.
