About this Audiobook

‘If great books encourage you to look at the world in an entirely new way, then Dominion is a very great book indeed . . . Written with terrific learning, enthusiasm and good humour, Holland’s book is not just supremely provocative, but often very funny’ Sunday Times History Book of the Year

Christianity is the most enduring and influential legacy of the ancient world, and its emergence the single most transformative development in Western history. Even the increasing number in the West today who have abandoned the faith of their forebears, and dismiss all religion as pointless superstition, remain recognisably its heirs. Seen close-up, the division between a sceptic and a believer may seem unbridgeable. Widen the focus, though, and Christianity’s enduring impact upon the West can be seen in the emergence of much that has traditionally been cast as its nemesis: in science, in secularism, and yes, even in atheism.

That is why Dominion will place the story of how we came to be what we are, and how we think the way that we do, in the broadest historical context. Ranging in time from the Persian invasion of Greece in 480 BC to the on-going migration crisis in Europe today, and from Nebuchadnezzar to the Beatles, it will explore just what it was that made Christianity so revolutionary and disruptive; how completely it came to saturate the mind-set of Latin Christendom; and why, in a West that has become increasingly doubtful of religion’s claims, so many of its instincts remain irredeemably Christian. The aim is twofold: to make the listener appreciate just how novel and uncanny were Christian teachings when they first appeared in the world; and to make ourselves, and all that we take for granted, appear similarly strange in consequence. We stand at the end-point of an extraordinary transformation in the understanding of what it is to be human: one that can only be fully appreciated by tracing the arc of its parabola over millennia.

Clara’s Verdict

Tom Holland’s Dominion is one of those books that arrives with a genuinely ambitious claim – that Christianity’s influence on Western civilisation is so total, so deeply embedded, that even those who have abandoned the faith remain shaped by it – and then proceeds to make the case so compellingly that you finish it unsure how anyone managed to miss this before. It won the Sunday Times History Book of the Year, and it deserved it. As an audiobook, narrated by Holland himself over a remarkable twenty-three and a half hours, it is one of the more substantial intellectual commitments you can make with your ears – and one of the most rewarding.

I’ve reviewed a great many history audiobooks over the years. This one genuinely changed how I think about the world I live in.

About the Audiobook

Holland’s central argument is that the values we consider most modern and most secular – human rights, the dignity of the individual, the preferential treatment of the poor and marginalised, even the scientific method – have Christian theology woven through their foundations. This is not a devotional argument. Holland is not making a case for belief. He is making a historical argument: that the revolution Christianity introduced into the ancient world was so radical, so unprecedented, that its effects have never fully dissipated, even as explicit faith has declined.

The book ranges across two and a half millennia – from the Persian invasion of Greece in 480 BC to the contemporary migration crisis in Europe – tracing how Christian ideas about suffering, redemption, equality, and conscience have shaped everything from secular liberalism to modern atheism. Along the way there are portraits of Paul, Augustine, Boniface, Francis of Assisi, Luther, and dozens of others, each drawn with the narrative vividness that has made Holland one of the most readable popular historians writing today.

The Sunday Times praised it as “written with terrific learning, enthusiasm and good humour.” That last quality – the humour – is something the audiobook version delivers particularly well. Holland is genuinely funny, and his ability to illuminate complex theological debates through the specific texture of individual lives makes twenty-three hours feel considerably shorter than it sounds. Published by Little, Brown Audio, released June 2025.

It is worth saying, too, that Dominion is not a comfortable book in the way that popular history sometimes tries to be. It doesn’t resolve the tensions it surfaces. The history of Christianity it traces includes the Crusades, the Inquisition, colonialism, and the persecution of heretics alongside the hospitals, the universities, and the abolition movement. Holland doesn’t flinch from either side, which is part of what gives the argument its intellectual honesty. A lesser writer would have softened the case to make it easier to swallow. Holland doesn’t bother, and the book is considerably more interesting for it.

The Narration

Holland narrates his own work, and the effect is superb. He has clearly been thinking about these ideas for years – the book began as a podcast series with Dominic Sandbrook – and the familiarity with the material gives his delivery an authority and ease that a professional narrator simply couldn’t replicate. He handles the theological complexity without losing the listener, the narrative sequences with real drama, and the comic passages with excellent timing. One reviewer was so impressed they actually interviewed him afterwards. At twenty-three and a half hours, the narration needs to sustain engagement across a vast arc, and Holland manages it without obvious strain.

What Readers Say

Dominion carries a rating of 4.5 out of 5 on Audible UK. Paul called it “an epic masterpiece of storytelling and scholarship” and named it his book of 2019 (the print edition predates the 2025 audio release). Baruch, who described himself as a long-standing Holland reader, called it his favourite of all Holland’s work. Peter C offered a somewhat more measured assessment – “a good read for those seeking an introduction” – but acknowledged that its core argument, though seemingly obvious once stated, genuinely does need to be stated, and its implications are fascinating. Elliot, reviewing in 2026, called it “a great explanation to the creation and sustaining of western civilisation.”

One outlier review appears to be reviewing delivery of a physical book rather than the audiobook, which can be safely discounted.

Who Should Listen?

For anyone who has ever puzzled at how secular Western liberalism ended up with values that look remarkably Christian even after abandoning the theology. For history readers who loved Holland’s earlier work on Persia, Rome, or the Crusades. For podcast listeners who enjoy the rest of Holland’s output but haven’t yet committed to the full book. And frankly, for anyone who wants to understand the world they’re living in more completely – regardless of their own position on faith.

This is a demanding listen, but it repays every hour you give it. Start Dominion on Audible UK – your copy is here.

So good I interviewed the author

As readable an overview as you'll get of how the Christian message has impacted European culture .. which is clearly a complicated story with plenty of dark times. Holland has an almost-unique capacity to combine careful historical analysis with vivid storytelling. I've read most of his books, and I think…

A good read for those seeking an introduction to a history of Christianity and/or its influence.

This book takes you on a high speed jaunt through the last two thousand years of Western history with plenty of interesting stories to support Tom Holland's argument that Christianity has been fundamental in shaping the way we think today whether we are actually Christians or not. It is an…
