About this Audiobook

Contains the first three books in the Earthen Contenders Series:

Unexpected Healer
Unprepared Healer
Undisguised Healer

Something went wrong. Something went very wrong….

Against his will, Thaden was transported elsewhere in a big flash of light along with millions of other Humans from Earth, to a place where they would train to become Contenders in a whole new world. Unfortunately for him, something occurred during his transference into the “Training” program, and he was ejected from the whole training process and sent into the open mouth of an active volcano for bodily disposal.

Through a miraculous and horrifying series of events, Thaden managed to survive, only to find himself alone in the middle of a dungeon with no clothes, no weapons, and no way to defend himself. Worst of all, the strange new Assimilation System automatically assigned a Class to him without his knowledge, which ended up sticking him with a Support-based Class that has absolutely no offensive capabilities. As an Assistant Healer, none of his spells did any damage and he couldn’t even pick up a weapon to defend himself if he wanted to!

But all hope isn’t lost, as Thaden quickly learns something unique about himself that might just allow him to survive long enough to escape the dungeon. Sure, all his new magical spells might be focused on healing and protection, but what does it mean when he seemingly won’t ever run out of Mana…?

This story contains an overpowered MC with a normally non-combat Class, LitRPG progression mechanics and stats, and isekai/portal fantasy elements. Contains no sexual content or harems.

Clara’s Verdict

LitRPG isn’t a genre I come to without some trepidation – the form’s reliance on game mechanics and stat progression can feel airless to readers who didn’t grow up with dungeon crawlers. But Jonathan Brooks makes a compelling case for the genre’s pleasures with this three-book omnibus. The hook – an ordinary person accidentally assigned a healer class in a world where healing is considered entirely non-combat – is deceptively clever, and Brooks runs with it with considerable energy. At forty-five hours, this is a serious commitment, but fans of the genre will find it thoroughly satisfying.

About the Audiobook

Thaden is transported from Earth to a training programme designed to turn humans into Contenders – warriors in a new world with its own rules and power structures. Something goes wrong during his transfer; instead of landing in the training system, he’s ejected directly into an active volcano designated for bodily disposal. He survives – just – and finds himself alone in a dungeon with no equipment, no weapons, and an Assimilation System that has assigned him a support-based Healer class with absolutely no offensive capabilities.

The three books – Unexpected Healer, Unprepared Healer, and Undisguised Healer – follow Thaden as he discovers something unique about his particular configuration that might just allow him to compensate for the combat limitations of his class. The progression mechanics are central to the narrative: stat increases, ability unlocks, and the accumulating logic of Thaden’s growing power are the engine that drives the story forward across all three volumes.

Brooks is careful to note that the series contains no sexual content or harems – a specific assurance that will matter to some readers in a genre where those elements are not uncommon. The focus is squarely on the problem-solving pleasure of watching a seemingly disadvantaged character find creative ways to compete. At forty-five hours plus, this omnibus offers exceptional value for dedicated LitRPG listeners.

The Narration

Miles Meili narrates the collection, and his performance suits the material well. LitRPG demands a narrator who can handle both the human emotional beats and the more mechanical passages of stat description without losing momentum, and Meili manages this balance competently throughout. Forty-five hours is a demanding run for any narrator; the consistency across all three books is commendable.

What Readers Say

As a recent release, this collection is still building its reviews base. The Earthen Contenders series has a dedicated following among LitRPG readers, and fans of the individual volumes have consistently praised Brooks’s inventiveness with the healer-class premise and his ability to sustain narrative momentum across long-form progression fantasy. The omnibus format has been welcomed as an efficient way to experience the arc of all three books without the gaps between individual releases.

Who Should Listen?

This collection is for LitRPG and progression fantasy devotees who want a substantial immersive listen. If you enjoy isekai narratives – stories in which protagonists are transported to fantasy worlds with game-like mechanics – and appreciate an underdog protagonist who succeeds through ingenuity rather than raw power, Earthen Contenders delivers on exactly those terms. Beginners to the genre might find the stat-heavy passages initially unfamiliar, but the story’s emotional core is clear enough to bring in readers who are new to LitRPG conventions.
