“Fourth Wing will have your heart pounding from beginning to end … A fantasy like you’ve never read before.”―Jennifer L. Armentrout, #1 New York Times bestselling author

Enter the brutal and elite world of a war college for dragon riders from USA Today bestselling author Rebecca Yarros.

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general-also known as her tough-as-talons mother-has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.

But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away . because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter-like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.

She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.

Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom’s protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.

Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda-because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.

Clara’s Verdict

Every so often a book arrives wrapped in so much hype that approaching it feels like a dare, and Fourth Wing is one of those. Rebecca Yarros’s dragon-rider romantasy became a genuine phenomenon, propelled by an army of enthusiastic readers, and the happy news is that it largely earns the noise. This is propulsive, high-adrenaline entertainment with a fierce heroine and a plot that rarely pauses for breath.

Yarros understands momentum. From the moment Violet Sorrengail is forced into a brutal war college for dragon riders, the book barrels forward, stacking danger upon danger, and the pages, or in our case the hours, disappear. The romance is combustible, the world is vivid, and the central relationship crackles with the enemies-to-something tension the genre thrives on. It is not the most original story ever told, and some readers will spot its influences a mile off, but it delivers its pleasures with total commitment.

I can be candid about its imperfections, a familiar architecture and a hero cut from well-worn cloth, and still recognise why it has swept so many readers off their feet. Fourth Wing is a masterclass in keeping an audience hooked, and it ends on a cliffhanger engineered to send you straight to the sequel. On its own terms, as irresistible page-turning escapism, it succeeds handsomely.

About the Audiobook

Fourth Wing is the first book in the Empyrean series, and it drops its heroine into a war college unlike any other. Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail had always expected to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Instead her commanding-general mother, described with real dread as tough as talons, orders her to join the hundreds of candidates competing to become the elite dragon riders of Navarre.

It is a lethal ambition for someone like Violet. Smaller than everyone around her, with a body that breaks easily, she is acutely vulnerable in a place where death is only a heartbeat away, because dragons, we are told, do not bond with fragile humans; they incinerate them. With fewer dragons willing to bond than there are cadets, most of her rivals would happily see her fail, and some, like the powerful and ruthless Xaden Riorson, have reason to want her dead simply for being her mother’s daughter. From that ferociously high-stakes premise Yarros builds a story of survival, ambition and dangerous attraction, and the tension rarely lets up.

The Narration

Rebecca Soler narrates, and she carries the enormous runtime, twenty-two hours and two minutes, with impressive stamina and range. Violet is a demanding role, by turns terrified, defiant, sardonic and lovestruck, and Soler tracks every shift, giving the heroine a wry, resilient voice that makes her easy to root for across the long haul. The supporting cast, from swaggering rivals to the brooding Xaden, are drawn with enough vocal distinction to keep a busy ensemble clear.

She also handles the book’s two registers, breathless action and simmering romance, with equal conviction, and the sheer momentum of her reading is a large part of why the hours pass so quickly. Listeners should note that the extended edition adds three bonus chapters read by Teddy Hamilton, offering a shift in perspective as a coda to the main story. Between them, the performances make the audiobook a thoroughly immersive way to experience a novel built, above all, for immersion.

What Readers Say

With a striking 4.8 average across nearly five hundred ratings, Fourth Wing has clearly converted its hype into genuine devotion. Mike came to it through the TikTok and Instagram buzz and found it more than lived up to the noise, hooked within three chapters and left obsessed, gripped by a brutality he found both addictive and shocking. Selina Antipas went furthest of all, calling it a masterpiece that obliterates everything and takes over your entire being, an instant new obsession.

The four and five-star reviews are refreshingly clear-eyed about why it works. MADEUPgroup praised the fast pace and the way the story keeps you guessing, comparing the sudden reversals to later books by Sarah J Maas, and warmed to a heroine who is not perfect and knows it. The most measured voice, S Payne, awarded four stars and admired the writing while judging the story not especially original, a fair caveat echoed gently elsewhere. Even AAhmad, who felt it did not quite blow them away, could not wait for the sequel after that cliffhanger. Taken together, the reviews explain the phenomenon: this is a book that grips hard and refuses to let go.

Who Should Listen?

Fourth Wing is tailor-made for listeners who love romantasy at its most propulsive, readers who want dragons, danger and a scorching central romance, and who are happy to be swept along rather than to pick at the seams. If you have enjoyed the more romantic, high-drama end of fantasy, this will very likely become an obsession, exactly as it has for so many.

Be warned that it ends on a cliffhanger designed to make the sequel irresistible, and that its considerable length is best met with an appetite for immersion. If fierce heroines, combustible chemistry and non-stop momentum are what you crave, you can Listen to Fourth Wing on Audible and find out for yourself why it took over so many reading lives.
