Clara’s Verdict

Ghost Hunter is the book that brings the original arc of the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness to its close, and endings are the hardest thing to get right. Michelle Paver rises to it. This is a climactic, emotionally charged finale that gathers up everything the earlier books have been building towards and pays it off with real feeling.

What moves me about it is the willingness to let the ending cost something. There is loss woven through the triumph, and Paver does not pretend otherwise. Readers describe finishing it in tears of both sadness and joy, and I can well believe it, because the book earns those feelings honestly across a long and faithful journey. A finale that dares to hurt a little always lands harder than one that plays it safe, and this one is braver than most.

You must come to this one having listened to what came before. As a standalone it would only puzzle you, but as the culmination of Torak’s story it is close to everything a devoted listener could ask for.

About the Audiobook

Ghost Hunter is the sixth book in the internationally bestselling Chronicles of Ancient Darkness, and it draws the original sequence that began with Wolf Brother to a close. As winter approaches and Souls’ Night draws near, the Eagle Owl Mage holds the clans in a grip of terror, and the world Torak has fought to protect stands on the edge of ruin.

To fulfil his destiny, Torak must seek the Mage’s lair in the Mountain of Ghosts. He does not go alone. Accompanied by Renn and Wolf, he must defy demons and tokoroths and find his way through the Gorge of the Hidden People. Each of the three faces their own trial along the way. Wolf must overcome terrible grief, and Renn must make an agonising decision, while Torak moves towards a confrontation he cannot avoid.

In the final battle against the last of the Soul-Eaters, Torak will face the most heart-rending choice of all. Everything the series has invested in these three companions comes to bear in that moment, and the resolution asks its listeners to hold triumph and sorrow in the same hand. By the close, Souls’ Night, the Mountain of Ghosts and the long shadow of the Soul-Eaters converge into a single breathless confrontation, and the payoff feels earned rather than simply granted. It is a fitting summit for a story that has always taken its young audience seriously.

The Narration

Sir Ian McKellen returns to narrate, and across six hours and nineteen minutes he brings the saga to a close with all the authority the finale demands. By this point his voice is inseparable from the world of the Forest, and there is real pleasure in hearing him carry Torak, Renn and Wolf across their last great trial.

Listeners are effusive about his contribution. One wrote that McKellen reads wonderfully, that his voice and pronunciation keep you invested, and that everyone deserves to hear this story. A finale like this one asks a great deal of its narrator, holding suspense, grief and release in a single sustained arc, and the reading rises to the occasion. The running time is comfortable enough to take in across an evening or two, and the familiar voice makes the emotional landing all the more powerful, as though an old friend were seeing the tale through to its end.

What Readers Say

This finale is deeply cherished, holding an average of 4.8 stars across 737 ratings. Readers describe an emotional roller-coaster, one writing that their feelings were taken through heartbreak, fear, relief and happiness, and that they were moved to tears of both sadness and joy. Many called it a fitting and perfect end to a wonderful series.

Several parents mentioned reading the whole series with their children and enjoying every book, and while a few noted the instalments can feel formulaic, they praised the crisp writing and the well-drawn, sympathetic characters. The consensus is that the series builds to a pleasing crescendo in this final volume. More than one reviewer went so far as to say the sequence deserves a far wider audience, which tells you how strongly Ghost Hunter lands as a conclusion.

Who Should Listen?

Ghost Hunter is for the listeners who have walked every step with Torak, Renn and Wolf. If you have followed the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness from the beginning, this is the payoff you have been waiting for, and it is best experienced as the culmination of the whole journey rather than as a starting point.

Families finishing the series together and adult fans of atmospheric, myth-soaked adventure will find it especially rewarding, and McKellen’s narration makes the farewell all the more affecting. If you are ready to see Torak’s story through to its close, settle in and Listen to Ghost Hunter on Audible for a finale that its listeners remember long after the last word.
