Clara’s Verdict

Skin Taker is the eighth Chronicles of Ancient Darkness book, and it opens with the sky itself turning against the Forest. Michelle Paver has always been superb at natural menace, and here she lets a midwinter catastrophe loose on the world she has spent so long building. It is a darker, more turbulent instalment, and it carries the series towards its endgame with real momentum.

For me, the pleasure of Paver at this stage is watching a world I trust be pushed to its limits. The stakes are personal and elemental at once, and Torak is asked to risk more of himself than ever before. There is doom and gloom in the opening chapters, as one reader cheerfully put it, and the book is all the more gripping for not flinching from it.

This is a chapter for the committed, best enjoyed by those who have travelled the earlier books, and it left its readers impatient for the finale. On its own terms, though, it stands as one of the most atmospheric instalments Paver has written, all storm and shadow and hard-won courage.

About the Audiobook

Skin Taker is the eighth book in Michelle Paver’s bestselling Wolf Brother series, and it plunges straight into crisis. In the Dark Time of midwinter, disaster strikes the Forest and chaos rules. Bears woken early from their dens prowl the shadowy valleys, desperate clans battle for survival, and in the turmoil only demons seem to thrive.

With their world thrown into upheaval, Torak, Renn and Wolf are tested as never before. A new evil haunts the devastated land, and to stand against it Torak must risk his sanity, his life and even his souls to save everything he loves. It is a story of myth, menace and natural magic, and it draws its listeners deeper into the astonishing adventure that began with Wolf Brother.

As the penultimate book in the sequence, Skin Taker carries the weight of everything that has come before while setting the stage for the finale still to come. Paver keeps her gift for making the wild world feel genuinely alive and genuinely dangerous, so that the midwinter setting becomes a character in its own right. This is the series at its most tempestuous, and it moves the larger story into position for its final act.

The Narration

Sir Ian McKellen narrates once more, and across seven hours and five minutes he gives this stormier instalment exactly the gravity it needs. By the eighth book, his voice has become part of the fabric of the series, and there is a deep satisfaction in hearing him guide Torak, Renn and Wolf through their most chaotic ordeal yet.

A book built on disaster and dread asks its narrator to sustain tension over long stretches while keeping the human moments tender, and this reading holds that balance with assurance. The slightly longer running time gives the darker passages room to build, so the sense of a world coming apart lands with full force. McKellen’s measured delivery makes even the most frightening turns feel controlled rather than merely loud, which suits Paver’s careful, atmospheric writing. For listeners deep into the series, his continued presence keeps the whole immersive experience of a kind, right up to the brink of the finale.

What Readers Say

Readers responded with enthusiasm, and the audiobook carries an average of 4.8 stars across 693 ratings. One described the arrival of a new Paver book as a magical yearly event, bringing both joy and a little fear, before calling Skin Taker quite a ride from its very first page. Another wrote that Paver writes like no other author they have read, praising the diaphanous web of intrigue and wonder that runs through her characters and storytelling.

Younger readers were swept up too, one describing the excitement of following Torak and Renn through the opening disaster and their delight at where the story went. In the interest of balance, a reviewer did find the pacing a touch slow in places and felt one or two moments were resolved a little too easily. Even so, the overwhelming impression is of an immersive, warmly received instalment that leaves its audience eager for the concluding book.

Who Should Listen?

Skin Taker is for listeners already invested in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness, and above all for those approaching the end of the saga. If you have followed Torak, Renn and Wolf this far, this penultimate book is essential, both for its own stormy drama and for the way it sets up the finale.

Fans of atmospheric, myth-rich adventure, whether older children or adults, will find plenty to hold on to, and McKellen’s narration remains a considerable draw. My advice, as ever, is to listen in sequence so the stakes carry their full charge, and then settle in and Listen to Skin Taker on Audible to weather the midwinter darkness with Torak before the story reaches its close.
