Stephen Fry's Greek Myths: Audiobooks in Order

by Stephen Fry

Few pairings in audio are as natural as Stephen Fry and the Greek myths. In this series the author narrates his own retellings, and the volume in our catalogue, Heroes, gives you 15 hours and 10 minutes of gods, monsters and mortals told with Fry’s unmistakable relish. Listeners agree: it holds a 4.6 star average. If mythology has ever tempted you, this is the doorway.

Why listen to Stephen Fry's Greek Myths?

This is the rare series where the question of narration answers itself. Stephen Fry wrote these retellings to be spoken, and hearing him deliver his own jokes, asides and etymological detours is half the pleasure. No hired voice could time them better.Heroes runs to just over fifteen hours, and the storytelling is naturally episodic: myth follows myth, so you can dip in on a short journey or sink into a whole afternoon. Because these are retellings rather than one continuous novel, beginning with this second volume poses no problem at all.Newcomers to mythology will find it welcoming, while those who studied the classics will enjoy Fry’s sly modern glosses. It suits anyone who wants substance without heaviness and erudition worn lightly.

5.0/5

I keep returning to this one, and I rarely say that. Heroes carries a 4.6 star average from listeners here, and for once the crowd and I are in perfect agreement. Fry’s affection for his material is audible in every sentence, and fifteen hours pass like a good dinner party. If I am strict, the episodic structure means momentum occasionally rests, but as an author-narrated performance it sits among the finest in our catalogue.
