About this Audiobook

Ever since he became a Christian at the age of forty, it has been Poirot actor David Suchet’s dream to make an audio recording of the whole Bible. In between filming the final episodes of Poirot, David Suchet spent over 200 hours in the recording studio to create the very first full-length audio version of the NIV Bible spoken by a single British actor. Volume 1 of the NIV Audio Bible includes the Law, Histories and Poetry, covering the books of Genesis to Song of Songs.

The NIV Audio Bible is also available as an app.

Clara’s Verdict

The proposition here is a remarkable one: David Suchet – best known to most British listeners as Hercule Poirot – spent over 200 hours in the recording studio to create the first single-narrator, full-length audio recording of the NIV Bible. Volume 1 covers Genesis through to the Song of Songs: the Law, the Histories, and the Poetry. Suchet became a Christian at forty, and it is impossible to listen to this recording without being aware of the personal significance the project held for him. That investment of belief – not merely time – gives the recording an emotional quality that distinguishes it from any number of competent but cooler readings of the same material.

At 45 hours and 51 minutes, this is a serious undertaking. But it is also one of the more extraordinary listening experiences available on any platform, regardless of your personal relationship with the text.

About the Audiobook

The New International Version is widely considered the most accessible modern English translation of the Bible – readable, contemporary in idiom, and faithful to the original texts without the archaic formality of the King James Version. For listeners who find the Bible daunting on the page, or who have always meant to engage with it properly but have never quite managed to begin, the audio format removes a significant barrier. You can listen whilst driving, whilst walking, whilst doing anything that doesn’t require active reading – and the cumulative experience of hearing these texts, in sequence, builds into something genuinely powerful.

Volume 1 contains some of the most important narratives in Western literature: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, the books of Samuel and Kings, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, the Song of Songs. These are foundational texts for an understanding of Western culture, ethics, and imagination, and they are also – when read by someone who actually loves them – tremendously compelling.

A companion PDF is included with the audiobook purchase, allowing listeners to follow along or take notes as they listen.

The Narration

David Suchet is, quite simply, one of the finest voices in English-language audio performance. His Poirot recordings demonstrated extraordinary range – precision, warmth, authority, occasional severity – and those same qualities serve the biblical material differently but equally well. Suchet does not perform the text theatrically; he reads with intelligence and genuine reverence, allowing the narratives to generate their own drama without imposing upon them. The Psalms in particular benefit enormously from a voice that understands verse as verse rather than reciting it as prose. Several listeners have noted that the NIV’s modern cadences, combined with Suchet’s delivery, make the material feel alive and immediate rather than archaic and remote.

What Readers Say

Rated 4.3 out of 5 on Audible UK from 183 ratings, with the vast majority of listeners offering enthusiastic praise. Several describe the recording as transforming their relationship with the Bible – making texts they had found inaccessible feel immediate and engaging. “The Gospels really come to life read by this fantastic actor” is typical of the response. Another listener describes Suchet as putting “his heart and soul into this reading.” One reviewer found it particularly effective as a study companion, noting features in the Kindle enhanced edition that allow annotation and highlighting alongside the audio.

The main caveat noted by a small number of users relates to older device compatibility with the Kindle enhanced format – a technical issue rather than a content one, and not relevant to standard Audible streaming or download.

Who Should Listen?

This recording is for practising Christians who want to engage with scripture in a sustained, meditative way; for lapsed or curious listeners who have always intended to read the Bible properly; and for anyone interested in the literary heritage of Western civilisation who wants to encounter these foundational texts with one of Britain’s great actors as their guide. It is also – and this is worth saying plainly – an extraordinary piece of audiobook craft, whatever your beliefs, and a testament to what is possible when a performer brings genuine love to a text.
